CL Hawks Just Fall Short in Loss to Boerne Geneva, 58-54

Matt Taliaferro led Canyon Lake with 12 rebounds in game with Geneva.

Canyon Lake could not hold onto a slim lead in the final quarter which resulted in a, 58-54 set back to Boerne Geneva at the Hawk house on Monday night.

               Way To Go Hawks!!

Geneva entered this contest with a sparkling 10-1 record but were in a fight throughout the game before holding on for a win after the best defensive effort on the year of the Hawks.

“Very proud of our defensive effort. It’s always tough to come off of a long break and be ready to play, but I think we came out and gave everything that we had,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman assessed. “We had guys flying around and making hustle plays, which is what we consistently need if we are going to play this way.”

Coach Chapman continued, “Offensively, we couldn’t get into much of a rhythm and looked rusty after the long break. We missed way too many shots and free throws and we were still in the game due to our effort and energy.”

The Hawks started the contest with a Taliaferro quick two points for their first lead and then a 7 point run by the visitors would have CL playing catch-up for the remainder of this battle.

CL was able to tie the score 4 other times before storming back from 6 point down, 40-36 to start the final period.

Pearse McCullagh was one of many Hawks that fed off with defensive energy.

Canyon Lake was literally all over the court in not giving Geneva any open shots which certainly helped in what Coach Chapman has been preaching.

“What caused our defense was how we started the evening in the beginning of the game,” Pearse McCullagh said on responding on tonight’s effort. “We wanted to make it as uncomfortable as possible for them. When we feel off our energy that helps us in not getting sloppy. Now that we know we can play like this, we can win playing with this type of defense for the rest of this season.”

The Lake was able to coax a 12-4 run in that 4th quarter for their first advantage since the Taliaferro bucket to start this game.

Down the wire this game was tied at 44, 46, 49 and 52 points and that final tied score was with 34 seconds to play on a 3 pointer by Colton Winters who led the Hawks in scoring with 14 points.

But Canyon Lake would only get one more bucket when Helijah Johnson drove the basket for a lay-up that close the gap to, 54-52 with 5 seconds left on the clock.

Two free throws gave Geneva their 4 point cushion and win.

    Go Hawks!!

“We need to build on this effort from today,” Coach Chapman closed. “Little by little we are putting things together. Now it’s time to put it all together and finish with a win. If we play like we did today, we are going to finish the season strong and with a chance to make a run.”

That marathon run will not have much rest as Canyon Lake will go to Hondo tomorrow for a chance to get that next win.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
