This week will have one sport, Basketball, now with just being one game or a week from hanging up jerseys.
The Lady Hawks have one game on Monday when Bandera comes to the Hawk Nest for that final battle. This is a make-up game due to, you know what ‘Covid’. The Lady Hawks will not qualify for a playoff berth after implementing a youth movement that had this team learning the hard way with little height and experience to draw from.
It will be the same for CL Boy’s Basketball after losing to Davenport. A win would have had a potential 3 team playoff for that 4th seed and a berth into the post-season, but with a loss this season will be in the books after Friday.
Softball and Baseball have started their exhibition contests and the Softball team beat Austin Anderson by one run and then lost on Friday to Smithville.
Yes, The ReSporter, understands that exhibitions are glorified practices but at the same time does show the Coaches just what is needed to be worked on in order to enter into their regular season and district season.
The Lake’s Baseball had their first scrimmage with Cuero and the Junior Varsity won, 10-0 and the Varsity scored 19 runs in their scrimmage.
In baseball there is a plethora of players competing for playing time and the Hawk’s have formed two JV squads in order to have an opportunity of giving each player more time on the field to show-off and impress the coaches for having a chance to be a starter.
Varsity Baseball scored 19 runs with all 13 players reaching base in their 9 inning, out of the gate exhibition game, against the Cuero Gobblers.
Soccer had this past week off after successful regular season contests. The Ladies will showcase a, 12-3 record entering district and the Boys will go into district play with a, 5-1-3 slate.
With Basketball on their final games the following are the players that have climbed the stat charts while wearing the Green & Gold Jersey’s.
The Ladies had just two Seniors and will not have as many chances for making a larger mark on their stats.
Kaitlyn Cox will finish her career in 12th place for block shots with 24 and is 5 blocks from moving to 11th on that list.
Cox is in 10th place for rebounds and needs 8 more to finish in 9th place in that category and 9th place in made 3 point shots and needs just two more to pass Char Hutson for the 8th spot.
Shelby Murphy needs 5 steals for 12th place on that all-time list that would pass the 91 steals Tiffany Arredondo acquired when she finished playing for the Hawks in 2010. Murphy stands at 55 steals for this season and is presently 16th place for number of steals for a season.
The Hawk Boy’s Basketball team had a few more players that inched up the charts this season.
With two games remaining, Colton Winters has 333 points this season and is averaging 17 points per game. For the all-time season stats, Winters is presently at 9th place and if he get’s his average would finish in the 8th spot, passing Tanner Jones who had 352 points during the 2010 season. Winters is 10th for field goals made and only needs three more to pass Stuart Lowry who finished with 109 during his 2011 season.
Continuing with Winters, he is presently tied with Parker Mott (2018 season) for 1st place with 70 with made three point shots.
Tyler Pauly will leave Canyon Lake’s hardwood in first place for total assists after passing Doug Hubnik two games ago. Pauly joins Hubnik as the only two players to top 100 or more assists in a season.
Pauly is averaging 5 assists per game and needs just one more assist to hit the 200 plateau for a career. Hubnik finished his career with 187 assists.
Pauly also has 79 made free throws this year and that puts him in 5th place needing 9 more to be in 3rd place behind Christian Pena with 109 (2010) and Parker Mott 97 (2018). With 4 more steals in his next two games would place Pauly at 9th place with 47 this campaign.
Peyton McMullen has been a blocking machine in his last 3 games and now has 31 for the year in 6th place and with 3 more would pass Tyler Williams (2017) and Trent MacRoberts (2019) in 4th place all-time.
More All-Time numbers for the Boy’s has Winters’ needing 3 more points to enter the top-10 for total points scored and Pauly would need 22 points to also enter that hallowed group of players.
Winters (73) is in 5th place for all-time 3 pointers made after passing his brother Garrett (71) in his last game. A very doable chance of finishing in 3rd place but to far to reach Parker Mott (160) and Andrew Riali (122).
All-Time on made free throws has Pauly (119) in 6th place and could very easily reach 4th place in this category. Pauly needs just 3 free throws to pass Matt Magness (120) and Andrew Riali (121).
How bout another Pauly stat and going up the chart march with steals (77) as he stands in 5th place and needs just two more to pass Neal Whitehead (78) back in 2010 when he finished his time at CL.
Peyton McMullen is in 11th place for all-time rebounds (225) and can pass Jarred Rollins (237) to break into this big-man club. McMullen had 15 rebounds in his last game that is the 3rd most for a game.
For his career, McMullen had 57 blocks and is 3 blocks away from passing Caleb Kreiger for 3rd place but too far away to reach Sean Nolan (85) and Tyler Williams (96).
All these players give their all on the court as The ReSporter cannot even attempt to count the number of times that Pauly has been knocked to the floor just for one example.
Senior Day for both teams this week on Monday for the Ladies and Tuesday for the Boys as these players will leave the court as winners for all the hard work put into this craft as well as excelling in the classroom. (The Biggest Stat)
Way to Go Hawks!!
