CL Hawk’s Maiden Voyage starts with Win over Gonzales, 14-8

Canyon Lake Hawks Post-Game talk after beating Gonzales, 14-8.

Canyon Lake’s Baseball season set sail with a 14-8 win at Gonzales on Monday night to start a busy week of action.

The Hawks will have another bout tonight in Marion and then start their SAISD Tournament on Thursday.

Tanner Schultz won his 5th consecutive game that stretches the last 3 years counting his opening game with these Apaches.

Junior Tanner Schultz win 5th straight game after a strong start in win over Apaches.

“I live for my pitching,” Schultz said. “Getting that double was icing on the cake. We started a little rusty and had our ups and downs but we pulled out a win and we will just learn to focus on the team we need to beat.”

CL started this voyage with some small ball that had a one out hit from James LaLonde that was followed with a 4 pitch walk for Schultz. A LaLonde stolen base and wild pitch had The Lake with a lead that was carried over the finish line for their 4th straight win.

Some first inning jitters had the home team tying the score but Schultz would settle down in his last two frames with the Apaches having just one player reaching base via an error. But that damage was erased on a double play and the scored tied when CL opened the scoring 8 runs as those latter innings commenced.

This time of year will have teams saving their starting pitching by not pitching a complete game because tournaments will need arms that can be used again later in the week.

That allowed both teams to go crazy scoring 14 runs in those last 3 innings before Peyton McMullen would come in for a strikeout to close the books and game in CL’s favor.

On how hard this game was based on the last week of freezing weather and no chance for game action, “Yeah, we were just trying to get in a rhythm at the plate,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “Those things just come with reps and we just used every part of the game to try to find it. When those lights go on they know what they are suppose to do….we just have to work on having more opportunities, this is the varsity, and we need to make that one pitch count.”

Gonzales was able to get some momentum with two towering home-runs off the bat of Jarren Johnson that had some excitement for the home-team but these Apaches had scalps but no gloves after they helped CL’s offense with 5 errors and wild pitching that helped give the Hawks 13 runs and enough separation to nullified those home-runs.

World’s Finest say Hawks are Too!

Pauly and LaLonde set the table with 4 combined hits and in that 6th inning, Canyon Lake, had their first 5 players reach base,  2 by walks, 2 being hit-by-pitch, and Schultz starting the frame with a double. After the first out, Hayden Baker ripped a double that was followed with another double from Pauly and that allowed the game to be safely put away.

Some rough seas but this voyage will continue with a game in Marion tonight and then a Thursday contest with SA Burbank at 3:00pm will continue this rush of games as the Hawks look to continue with their momentum that was abruptly stopped last year due to the Wuhan Virus.

A long time in coming and now a chance to continue last year’s run and now Go Hawks!!
