Hawk’s Take Down Burbank Bulldogs, 11-1

CL Hawks win 6th straight after an 11-1 win over Burbank.

Canyon Lake won their opening game in their SAISD Tournament after unloading an 11-1 victory and will face SA Jay on Friday at 3:00pm.

                     Go Hawks!!

CL had a slow start after Burbank opened the game with one run that gave, The Lake, their first deficit this season, 0-1.

The Hawks opened their 2nd inning with two straight singles off the bats of Matthew McLain and Hunter Anderson. A run-down out helped douse a chance for a score but CL had Catcher Chase Anderson returning the favor stopping a steal attempt in the bottom of that same inning which ruined a chance for a score for the Bulldogs.

Canyon Lake started the 3rd inning with two straight strike-outs and then had Tyler Pauly with a strikeout on a passed ball reaching first base. With an out that would have ended the inning was now on first base and the Hawks would have a 3 run lead after taking advantage of the Bulldogs snafu.

James LaLonde reached base with a walk to continue the inning and LaLonde has now safely reached a base in his last 9 games starting last year.

                   Go Hawks!!

Hunter Anderson and Tanner Schultz had the singles which helped put CL in the lead by two runs which would continue to grow as the game continued.

McLain would be the catalyst as he was one of 4 Hawks with multiple hits as this transfer from Smithson Valley finished with 3 hits and a walk and now possesses an impressive .833 batting average to start the season.

“I’m just trying to find a way to get on base, so I just haul butt for the base,” McLain said with a sly smile.

Matthew McLain with 3 hits and a walk on his 4 trips to the plate.

On the difference playing for a 4A school compared to the 6A variety, “You have to be more aggressive because the (strike) zone is bigger, but I treat every team the same and just try to win my own battles.”

How will Canyon Lake go into the rest of this tournament? “We keep working on our practices to stay intertwined and if someone makes a mistake, then we pick them up….it is kind’ve nice to know each other better.”

This win had a Hawk team that seemed to have a better plate appearances.

“Yeah, I am seeing the ball real well right now,” Hunter Anderson said after a two hit day that runs his hitting streak to 6 games.

A seven run fifth inning sealed the deal for the Hawks when the first 4 batters reached base with two singles (McLain & Gunnar Walker) that sandwiched the Anderson twins that reached base via a Bulldog error and fielders choice.

A Schultz double in that same inning continue the onslaught as 13 Hawks would come to the plate for this win.

Schultz started slow after allowing the first 3 Burbank players to reach on two singles and a triple. But allowing just one run was a good sign after picking off the first base runner helping minimizing that damage.

                    Hawk Proud

Schultz has to be in a small fraternity as this was his second win of the season with not many pitchers that can make that statement in their first week of action.

“We are pressing a little to start the games,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “We just can’t sit there and take pitches…we just have to be more aggressive at the plate and not be afraid to swing at it (the ball).”

Now Canyon Lake will continue their ascent with San Antonio Jay on Friday as this game now has the Hawks with a team batting average of .300 which will go a long way of solving that pressing tendency and continue getting wins.

Way to Go Hawks!!
