Cuero Scrimmage Down & One to Go in Elgin this Friday
Canyon Lake played Cuero in their first scrimmage last week and will go to work this week for a better outing when they travel to Elgin for a 5pm start time with the Sub-Varsity. CL’s Varsity will follow those those scrimmages around 7pm.
“Their (Cuero) speed was an eye opener for us,” Head Coach Charlie Drum stated. “You are never as good or bad as you think your are during these first scrimmages.”
“We played hard and found things we will need to get better at,” Drum continued.
On thoughts during that 12 minute live quarter, “I thought we played well but our turnover cost us a score as we were putting together a decent drive.”
That Hawk fumble happened on CL’s 7th play while averaging over 5 yards per snap.
Canyon Lake had a 10 play drive with their 2nd drive and scored on a Blayne Carnes 18 yarder untouched for the only score.
“Our offense was battling in there,” Carnes remembered. “We just did not jump and we will need to be more intentional with our energy and heart. We kept our speed and kept up but we will need to block better and have dominate lines.”
Defensively, The Lake, gave up two explosive running plays in each of the Gobbler’s drives leading for their two scores.
Cuero’s third drive was stopped after 6 plays with help from a holding call on the offense.
Canyon Lake did have several players held out of this scrimmage that were nursing some minor injuries.
With another week of work, those players will hopefully get their feet wet before the season starts at home against Wimberley.
A scrimmage that had ups and downs but will focus on finishing with more ups than downs next Friday.
Way to Go Hawks!!
