Canyon Lake Girls Soccer Kicks-Off
The Lady Hawks Soccer team has had a good start to kick off the season as they support a 4-2-3 record after beating Seguin, 4-0 last Tuesday night.
This season has also allowed the Hawks to play at their own stadium after being on the Road all of last season as the Hawk field acquired new turf.
The ReSporter will start off with a question and answer article from Head Coach Jeffrey Vaughn.
The ReSporter: Danielle Carpenter scored three goals last night…tell me what an athlete like this does for the team and how you progress through the season.
Coach Vaughn: “Any time you have a player that has a knack for scoring goals, it’s always a positive. I think that having Danielle on the team, is a morale booster. She is a senior that the youngsters look up to. She is an integral part to our offense, but has the soccer smarts to play anywhere we need her to…so progressing through the season she will be asked to play certain positions for us that will allow us to be better on any given night.”
The ReSporter: Seguin is not in the upper echelon of teams, however you beat them as bad as any other team they have played. What do you want to see in the team when playing games like this?
Coach Vaughn: “Seguin is where I started my high school coaching career, and they used to be in our district. I kept them on the schedule in case they are put back in our district after the re-alignment that will happen after the season.
Ultimately, I wanted to play a 3-5-2 against them…this would allow for more of an offensive threat and give us more space and allow us to control the midfield. That is exactly what they did last night…they executed while several girls stepped up and allowed them to gain confidence before entering district in a couple of weeks.”
The ReSporter: It seems like you are getting a lot of scoring from several players, tell me how this team is stacking up with your previous teams?
Coach Vaughn: “Uhhh…you have to love spreading the wealth!!! I believe that we might not have the individual talents of the years past, but as far as playing this game together as a team, we are stronger than we ever have been. This is unusual as I consider us to be a very young team…should be interesting to see the future of Canyon Lake Soccer.”
The ReSporter: Also, comment on playing at home for the first time in over a year? And does that do anything in helping your game preparation?
Coach Vaughn: “Hahahahaha….wow…the road trip is over! What a relief it is to not have to travel every Tuesday and Friday. The girls seem to get hyped up about playing at home…and that helps…you can feel it in the pre-game warm-up that they are more excited about playing at home. You know…the last time we played at home…the field was grass!”
The ReSporter: How tough is the District and where will Canyon Lake be in the bunch as District play approaches.
Coach Vaughn: “Whew, the District play is very tough, (Dripping Springs, Canyon, Smithson Valley, Schertz Clemens, Canyon Lake and Wimberley) and quite frankly it always has been…unfortunately that’s what happens when you are a 3A school playing soccer in a 4A district. I respect all the teams in our district and am interested in where we will end up. 4 out of 6 go to the playoffs, and I feel like the girls would like to get back to that level of play. We must take this time to rest some injuries at the same time as pushing ourselves harder at practice the next couple of weeks.
