CLJV Energized in Win Over La Grange, 44-36
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity outlasted the La Grange Leopards after seeing 66 total points scored in the 2nd half and win, 44-36.
The difference in this victory came during that first half as the Hawks forged out to a 14 point margin in what would help in holding off a hard charging Leopards.
CL started the game fumbling the kick-off but La Grange would return the favor after fumbling on their first play from scrimmage and no harm done.
The Lake would then get their first score which proved to be a lead that would not be relinquished. This drive went 70 yards with a 19 yard run by Tyler Balderas that started this set of downs and a 40 yard strike from QB Steven Crowder to ‘Everready’ AJ Acosta to book-end this drive and a Hawk, 6 point lead.
LG’s next drive was all passes that ended with 4 consecutive incompletions leaving CLake responding with a 74 yard drive and a 19 yard run by Justin Abbott and 14 point Hawk lead.
Canyon Lake had an interception by Chevy Standifer returned 95 yards but a Hawk penalty nullified that score and reducing that INT to a 30 yarder but still keeping the Leopards off the scoreboard.
That would be the extent of scoring during those first two quarters with no inkling of what might be in store for that 2nd half. Apparently, Coaches for both teams were able to rally the troops into a scoring frenzy.
Grange would not take long to score to start the 3rd period when a Fenix one yard run after three explosive plays that took 1:30 off the clock and, 14-8.
CL would use 2 plays to answer LG on a 57 yard pass to Balderas and a scant 47 seconds and Hawk, 20-8 lead.
The Hawks would use a 10 yard sack from Carson Reinarz that added with some penalties leaving the Leopards needing 48 yards for a first down. No problem as the Leopard’s punter had a 49 yarder leaving CL setting up their next drive on the 31 yard line.
A first play 62 yard run by Wyatt Bates set up two runs by Rodriguez that gave the home team a, 28-8 lead with 3:11 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
It took 16 seconds for LG’s Scott to gallop 64 yards on a pass from Barber and a, 28-16 Hawk lead.
Canyon Lake would have 3 plays that was capped off on a Rodriguez 55 yard pass from Crowder that took one minute and 4 seconds off the clock and before the crowd could find their seats, Williams for LG scampered, 70 yards on a kick-off return that used 15 seconds and had CL with a 12 point lead, 36-24.
La Grange’s defense finally held CL on their next drive and the Leopards would inch closer with an 8 play drive and score, 36-30 with 6 minutes remaining in this roller-coaster ride for the ages.
The Lake would recover the Leopards on-side kick and needed 49 yards on 6 plays that was capped off with Standifer (who finally recovered from his exhausting interception return earlier) with two plays of 13 and 21 yards and a Hawk, 44-30 lead with 2:16 left to play.
La Grange would keep things interesting when Williams returned his 2nd kick-off this time going 75 yards and taking 12 seconds off the clock, 44-36.
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity ran (literally) out the clock for their first win of the season and will now regroup for their next challenge on the road against Georgetown East View.
On being perfect in the passing game with 3 touchdowns and a two-point conversion, QB Crowder responded, “We were in a zone…the line gave me enough time to work with and the receivers made me look good. Our energy was a lot better than last week and our line got off their blocks.”
Energizer Acosta who had a hand in every facet of this game defensively and offensively talked bout this night, “We were disappointed in ourselves after last week’s game. The Coaches picked us up and we came into tonight’s game with a lot of energy.”
That is saying something coming from a player that runs in his sleep, “Yeah, I run in my sleep and keep my brother up and he was glad when we got bunk beds.”
On what the team will do to keep this energy output on overload, “We will look at film and work on our pass coverage and go into next week’s game with high expectations!”
Way to Go-Go-Go Hawks!!
