CL Hawk’s Freshman Win Nail Biter Over La Grange, 36-32
Canyon Lake Freshman decided not to spot their opponent to a 20 point lead which helped in a 4 point win over La Grange in this, 36-32 nail biter.
The Hawks were able to take their first possession 71 yards in 8 plays and scored when James Garza went up the middle for 10 yards and statement score with a 2 point exclamation, 8-0.
La Grange was not deterred when they scored on a 54 yard one play drive by Broussard to tie the score, 8-8.
The Lake would score on their next two possessions with help from Carter Williams’ interception sandwiched in betwean those two scores.
That first score had Kaiden Lewis with two carries covering 41 yards for a lead that would stand with some nail biting that had your local manicurist coming to the rescue.
A Haardt 33 yard run to start the 2nd half scoring for the Leopards and a botched next possession that had a fumble returned for another score had the Hawk fans biting fingernails to the quick in no time.
Canyon Lake was able to put a semblance of normalcy with a pass from QB Ryder Hopper to Williams that gave CL a 10 point lead, 36-26 as the 4th quarter started.
La Grange would score on that drive but CL’s defense did not allow any explosive plays and that depleted the clock. Canyon Lake was able to rush for two first downs and seeing the clock read, 0:00 and the first win of this season.
Garza, who transferred to the Hillcountry from Corpus, led the team with 85 yards and two scores as this player would be hard to tackle for runs up the middle.
“We played as a team and our line did a phenomenal job,” Garza started. “All I had to do is hit the holes hard and it all worked out!”
Hit the holes hard was a truism as yards after being hit was a contributing factor in reaching 19 first downs and milk the clock that won this game.
On next week’s battle with Georgetown East View, “We will need to comeback and hit ‘em harder for another win!”
Williams is in his second year in the Hillcountry from Lubbock and this player’s interception and catch for a touchdown were defining moments that allowed enough separation for this win.
“I decided to get mad and dominate on defense,” Williams said when commenting on how the Leopards were able to get back into this game. “We had good blocking and on the interception… I read the quarterback’s eyes and was able to get to the ball….this felt good to get our first win.”
Canyon Lake had a balanced running with 4 different Hawks rushing for 44 yards or more for a 6.7 yards per carry in this win.
Hopper was perfect with two completions adding a 25 yard strike to Lewis.
Now that first win can become two with a similar effort in next week’s contest in Georgetown.
Way to Go Hawks!!!
