CL Hawk’s 17 Point First Quarter With La Grange Proves Enough for Win, 31-14

Canyon Lake lines up for final touchdown win over La Grange, 31-14

Canyon Lake’s 17 point outburst to start the game proved too much for La Grange as the Hawks evened their record going into next week’s contest with 5A East View.

                            Let’s Go Hawks!!

“We came out ready on all three phases in this game with our defense, offense, and special teams,” Head Coach Charley Drum exclaimed. “We need to learn how to do that for the whole game. They were a very fast team and we have to get our bodies in shape.”

CL had several players missing plays due to cramps, “We showed our depth when we had players leaving the game which gave several players a chance to see some significant time to play and now we will have a very good team (East View) next.”

Senior Defensive Back Blayne Carnes got CL going picking off the Leopards first pass and returning to the 2 yard line. That play resulted in a quick score when Helijah Johnson bruised through the line for a Hawk, 7-0 lead.

The Lake’s defense held the home team to a 3 play and punt series and then CL’s offense went 6 plays for 51 yards with James Bates bursting up the middle for a 27 yard run and Hawk, 14-0 lead with over 6 minutes still remaining in that first quarter.

Another Grange mistake on a fumbled kick-off return that had CL setting up shop on the Leopards 32 yard line. This time Canyon Lake’s drive stalled on their 4 yard line giving Dalton Stanley a chip shot filed goal and a Hawk 17 point lead.

The Leopards would finally awaken with a quick answer when Bravion Rogers darted around the visitor’s sideline for 57 yards and cutting the Hawk’s lead back to 10 points. Up to that run, La Grange had negative offensive yardage.

A three and out sequence for CL when all three plays resulted in negative yards showed that this game might not be a run-a-way win after that fast start turned into a slugfest.

The Hawk defense would force another turnover when Jeremy Greene was moved to linebacker and was able to knock a pass into the air that had fellow linebacker Brock Coburn camped out under the ball and a change of possession.

“I have not had a chance to play much linebacker,” Greene said with envy. “We have so much depth and Coach Hoop just told me to go in and hit somebody.”

On this drive the Hawks were facing a 2nd and 11 yards needed to keep the drive going and that had Shayne, had no Moss gathering under any stone as he burned down the field for 73 yards to the Leopards 4 yard line.

That was the 7th longest run in Hawk history:
             Player Yds Game Year
         1. Austin Brennan 90 Blanco 2016
         2. Trenton Lorett 87 Austin Reagan 2017
         3. Josh DeVries 82 Smithville 2014
         4. Jacob Ruff 79 Burnet 2018
         5. Tanner Faris 76 Bandera 2015
         6. Eduardo Covarrubias 75 Fredericksburg 2010
         7. Shayne Moss 73. La Grange 2021

This run was topped off with a wide open Tanner Schultz in the end zone with right under 5 minutes still left before half.

                       Let’s Go Hawks!!

La Grange would use Rogers for passing, rushing, receiving, kick-off & punt returns and that same weapon struck again to start the final period this time with a catch and run for 89 yards and now trailing 10 points, 24-14 with plenty of time to play.

Canyon Lake’s offense continued to be bogged down gaining 4 yards before their 4th punt off the foot of Stanley. This was Stanley’s best day punning for a 38 yard average and this time boomed his punt for 44 yards.

LG still had plenty of time for an explosive (Rogers) time to score and having the Hawk fans edging to the front of their seats.

A 40 yard pass to (you guessed it) Rogers gave LG needing just 35 yards for another score. The Hawk defense strapped down these Leopards with one yard gained and turning the ball over on downs.

LG’s defense put a stop to The Lake’s offense after that Hawk last score, holding their Visitors to a paltry 35 yards of offense before this Hawk chance to run out the clock.

It was a 12 play drive that went 66 yards and Johnson ending what he started with a 5 yard touchdown this time and Hawk a win, 31-14.

This last drive had fumbles that would bounce back up to a Hawk player as this scoring drive was still littered with some mistakes that happened to keep a much needed drive alive for the win.

Kyler Herber & Jeremy Greene instrumental in Hawk win over La Grange.

Canyon Lake’s defense forced two turnovers that had CL taking advantage in scoring those two times. Defense continues to play lights out and Defensive Tackle Kyle Herber was one of many players to come through with some lock down stops.

“We used our 5 man front to help stop their direct snap to Rogers,” Herber said in response on holding ‘do everything’ Rogers in check for most of the game besides his two explosive plays. “We were beating them with numbers.”

On what the Hawk Nation can look for in next week’s game, “We are going to hit them in the mouth and give it our all and we are going to just keep winning!”

Good words to go by….Greene was quick with a response playing East View, “We are going to give them our best shot!”.

Next up will be Georgetown East View (1-1) at the Hawk Nest…
