CL Hawks Apply Liquid Paper to Win Over Blanco, 7-0
Canyon Lake and Blanco looked in a mirror and saw each other as both offenses struggled in a Hawk 7-0 win.
“This was a typical Blanco game,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said. “Penalties cost us yardage and we will fix that but I give all the credit to Blanco and we were just fortunate to have that final drive which came in handy.”
This game went 47:40 without a score before a Dalton Stanley to Chase Anderson 10 yard pass play broke the tie and The Lake will finish their non-district slate, 3-2 and will now prepare for the #3rd ranked Austin LBJ squad.
Defense won this contest in holding the Panthers to 9 first downs while Canyon Lake was able to use 7 of their 10 first downs on a final drive for this hard fought victory.
Offense is usually a beauty contest with lofty stats but the Hawk Defense will take home the beauty crown winning the turnover battle 2-1 as all three turnovers by both teams coming from interceptions.
For Canyon Lake, those interceptions by Austin Bowers and Jeremy Greene, came deep on the Hawk’s side of the field which helped stop the Panther’s scoring opportunities. Those thefts came down to how well the Hawk defense stopped the run forcing passing plays which is not either teams strong point.
It was Greene’s 4th career interception which places him tied with Doug Hubnik in third place trailing Eric Nelson (10) and Trent Lorett (5) for Canyon Lake.
Canyon Lake did have a kick-off return by Helijah Johnson taking it to the house but a penalty brought that score back which returned the Hawks to a pedestrian game mode until their final possession.
Both teams averaged right at 3 yards per carry and a lot of dust/rubber pellet clouds being churned up on the synthetic turf.
CL had not been churning out slot-t yardage before that last 98 yard drive that resulted in a win, in fact that 98 yards was 58 yards more than what was accumulated during the three and a half previous quarters.
The Drive was vintage Hawks though as the sleeping giant used 17 plays with 5 of those snaps going 12 or more yards.
The most important play was on a 3rd and 8 down at the Hawk 4 yard line. Johnson’s halfback pass to Jeremy Greene went for 21 yards to give CL breathing room and help open some more positive plays.
Canyon Lake was able to convert 4 third down plays to first downs with that final play a touchdown pass. Defensive beast, Kolten Ramey along with a bus load of defensive players had his usual introduction to an opposing quarterback.
“I saw that I was one on one and he (QB) was gaining ground so I just dove for him and made the play,” Ramey said on a first half sack that stopped a Blanco possible first down. “I have game goals and when I reach them I will strive for getting better. Making those goals just motivates me to keep getting better and better….I try to minimize those little things because they matter.”
Another stop had two interceptions with one (Austin Bowers) in the end zone and then Greene’s interception inside the 10 yard line that was returned 50 yards.
“I thought I had a pick six but my injuries have slowed me down, “ Greene lamented on missing a scoring opportunity.
On how these games with Blanco will many times become a defensive battle, “Yeah, we know each other pretty well and our offenses are very similar. We knew we would have make our mark and be up to the challenge.”
The Red Zone Defense was perfect on this night holding the Panthers 3 times inside the 20 yard line while applying pressure at those right times that left Blanco holding a lot of liquid paper.
Way to Go Hawks!!
