CL Hawks JV Have Win(dy) Day Over Lampasas JV, 24-06
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity won their 5th straight battle win(d)ning a hard fought game against Lampasas JV to remain in first place in District 13-4A Division I.
Lampasas started this game with 3 straight running plays for 5 yards resulting in an 8 yard punt into the wind that gave CLJV a short 37 yard drive and a score going on a 1 yard dive play by Justin Abbott, 6-0.
Abbott would make his mark on the defensive side of the ball on this night with two sacks that had one resulting in a desperate throw by the Badger QB that found the hands of Offensive Lineman Hayden Wilson for the Hawk’s second touchdown, 12-0.
The play was set up after CL had a 9 play drive that ended with a lost fumble at the Badger 7 yard line.
The Lake’ defense then would have two tackles in the Badger’s backfield with that second negative play being an interception or pick-six for Wilson.
“Coach called a wide smoke, which is an outside blitz on the right side,” Abbott remembered. “The guy (qb) tried to dodge me but I just wrapped him up. The big thing is our coaches had the right call and they want the best for us and love it.
“Abbott was running straight at their quarterback and I was running to the ball and everything went into slow motion as the quarterback slung the ball into the air and that was my first pick-six,” Wilson said like a movie director.
Abbott would end another Lampasas drive on an 8 yard sack that stopped a Badger drive and 4th down try at CL’s 22 yard line that ended the half.
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity would score their next touchdown by draining the 3rd quarter clock on an 11 play drive that covered 76 yards and a Hawk, 18-0 lead going into the 4th quarter.
This drive was introduced with a Cadence Rodriguez run for 31 yards that would then have Wyatt Bates entrance into the game receiving a hand-off 3 times covering 33 more yards.
Lampasas would stage their only touchdown drive next that covered 53 yards that left 8 minutes remaining in the game, 18-6.
That would have CL taking any hope of a Badger comeback when Standifer took his Chevy to the levee for a 42 yard scamper setting up a final score by Abbott and Hawk win, 24-6.
CL’s defense would rule the rest of this game with other players going, sacking, at your local grocery store. Carson Reinarz joined in with some sacks on this night that brought in extra pay for working overtime.
“I have been working on reeling it in and not trying to over pursue,” Reinarz said. On what this team will do this next week for a chance to win a district championship?
“We are going to work on being stronger and faster and smarter,” Reinarz said like a Rhodes Scholar.
“We are growing a lot more as a team and our plays are looking a lot better, during the first of the year we were mixed up,” Wilson said when responding on how this team wants to end their season.
A Win(dy) game that will now set up a battle in Burnet for a chance to finish the season on top of district.
