CL Lady Basketball Have Started Season, 2-1
Canyon Lake Lady Hawks have started their season sporting a 2-1 record after starting their campaign with a loss to a Young Ladies Leadership Academy, 48-43. That has been followed up with two wins last Friday against Johnson City, 40-20 and earlier last week a Hawk win over Ingram Moore, 51-23.
This year has had an influx of new faces which might remind the Old Timers of that Freshman team in 2015 that had a 4 year run that erased the all-time record to a winning slate.
That above .500 record went below water these past two seasons as CL at this writing needs 3 more wins to get back above that barrier. (178-180)
There are presently 7 freshman players suiting up for the Varsity and looking below have come to the table ready to take the reigns for better season. That would need just 4 more wins to give The Lake more wins than last year’s squad.
“I’m real pleased with our effort,” Head Coach Zach Burleson stated. “We are playing hard. Mistakes are going to happen, but if you play hard enough then you have a chance to overcome them. Of course, there is a lot for us to learn. But we have a good group. We will gain some valuable experience this year.”.
Returning players are Juniors Kylie Rust, Maddie Pipkin, and Shelby Porter. As well as Sophomore Sofia George, and Senior Allysia Menchaca.
George has a 14 point per game average presently and two Freshman have totaled double digits, Marley Christian (26) and Mya Vorhis (23) during this young season.
The Lake is also averaging 20 steals per game plus a whopping 38 rebounds per game.
Those rebounds has 57 coming on the offensive board. That stat can be a negative based on having a poorer shooting percentage. When meeting a good rebounding team that might be a cause for a loss by double digits.
A lot of turnovers but those have been minimized with steals.
Canyon Lake’s next home date will be November 22nd against Austin North East starting off at Noon.
Other Newbies on this Year’s Roster not mentioned above:
Reece Coburn #2 Freshman
Cadence Patterson #10 Sophomore
Brynne Beck #13 Freshman
Ayren Lightfoot #14 Freshman
Brilee Eaton #15 Freshman
