CL Lady Hawk’s Basketball Enter Break with 4 Game Winning Streak
Canyon Lake’s Lady Basketball team finished off an outclassed Austin Northeast school by 62 points as this young Hawk club ran their record to, 6-3.
Young is the operative word for this year’s edition for CL Basketball having 6 freshman on the roster with 3 of those players starting.
Back during the 2016-17 year, CL fielded another freshman class that finished their career at the top in all those all-time stats categories. That team finished the first season nursing an, 0-8 district record.
They averaged 43 points per contest compared to last year’s Covid Team that struggled with a 24 point per game average. After scoring 69 points in this win over Austin NE, this year’s team has a 41 point game average.
That 2016 team did coax 12 wins and then had the best season in Hawk history the next season going 3 rounds in the playoffs.
“We had a good freshman class in 2016-17 season but this year’s group has a lot more depth,” Head Coach Zach Burleson assessed. “That team (’16) had Reagan (Heun) which helped them but this group has several players that bring something different that they are good at and it will be our job to help them get better at eliminating their weaknesses while improving and getting rounded with more strengths.”
In this win over Austin, The Lake, substituted in bunches, 5 at a time. And that 2nd group used another trio of freshman players showing off that abundance of depth.
Sophomore Sofia George, who’s averaging 10 points per game finished last season scoring 83 points while garnering 98 points in her first 10 contests. A difference of 6 points per game one year later.
George is a good example of the difference a year can make with a serviceable 2020 season that has already been bested in comparing the first 10 games vs. last year’s 20 games played by George last season.
20 Games 10 Games Sofia George 2020 2021 Points Scored 83 98 3 Pointers Made 10 12 Free Throws Made 15 16 Rebounds 53 49 Assists 6 6 Steals 20 36
Looking at those improvements will show how this year’s team should be gauged on improvement as the season continues knowing that consistency will show what might be in store for CL’s Basketball in years to come.
6 Players 6 Players 10 Games Freshman So/Jr/Sr Points 197 179 3 Pointers Made 18 16 Free Throws Made 31 25 Rebounds 198 147 Assists 49 39 Steals 89 88
The ReSporter could have talked with any of this games players since they all averaged bout the same amount of playing time.
There were 3 that reached double digit scoring with 12 points each, Sofia George, Reece Coburn, and Brynne Beck.
Vorhis and Marley Christian just missed that double digit mark with each having a 9 point day.
Mya Vorhis and George ended with 6 rebounds a piece with George (7) and Coburn (5) finishing the two highest players in steals.
Consistency will need to better as this pre-district games get closer to those games that count in January when district starts.
After starting the season scoring over 40 points the following 5 games were all under that mark.
This 62 point win was not a good indicator of that consistency based on the level of play.
Having 9 Freshman & Sophomores that have been on the hardwood and a supporting cast of 3 players in the Junior/Senior category, shows how this season will be a learning process that will pay dividends in the year’s to come.
Quotes from Freshman, Reece Coburn, Marley Christian and Mya Vorhis.
On thoughts from that first game to the Thanksgiving break:
Coburn: “I think we were very timid when we started and now we are starting to get more chemistry with each other.”
Vorhis: “Last year we were good as a team and we got better as a team as the season continued. But when we started we were not used to playing against more competitive teams.”
Christian: “We started this year trying to find our openings in our offense. I want us to start getting more shots off.”
The ReSporter: Yes, the ole adage that you can’t score if you don’t shoot would apply to that comment above. Shooting with open shots being that operative goal.
On thoughts of what you would like to improve or see going into district play?
Coburn: “I want to keep working on my layups and getting more steals….we have been practicing on distributing the ball and giving everyone more opportunities.”
The ReSporter: Defense creates Offense!!
Vorhis: “I want to continue working on my spinning the ball.”
The ReSporter: That statement comes on the way Vorhis is shooting and wanting to get a better follow through form.
Christian: “I worry about shooting more and seeing how everyone else is getting their shots off…but want to work on shooting the ball better.”
The ReSporter: Practice….Practice….Practice!!
But, for that to happen, this group will be learning in a game of hard knocks that will hopefully pay dividends as that maturity continues to be molded.
Congrats and Let’s Go Lady Hawks!!

The Canyon Lake Lady Hawks finished their first third of the season with a win over Ingram-Moore on the road on Tuesday in a 55-29 conquest.
The Lake had won an earlier battle against Moore and continued that same script in this victory.
This win got CL over the .500 mark for their all-time games, 183-182 after going underwater during the last 3 years.
CLake had all but one player score, in fact, that was the same scenario with rebounds and assists as the wealth was spread around with each Hawk player being able to contribute in this win.
Comparing the two contests showed that improvement category after securing more assists, blocks, and reducing those turnovers. That also included having a better shooting percentages with 5 different girls making a 3-pointer totaling 7 for this game.
Shelby Porter had magnets in her hands after her 5 offensive rebounds and 3 steals to go along with a recorded block.
“I’m very pleased with Shelby’s continued improvement,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “She did a good job today reading the ball off the rim and making a play for it. She’s a very important piece to this team.”
Brynne Beck contributed in all facets of this win, “Another very important player. She has continued to make strides. Brynne has been doing a great job all year and she is going to be a great player for us,” Coach Burleson continued.
Now with a season cut by 1/3 will now have this next group of games to finish the year before district comes calling in January, Canyon Lake will be looking to keep improving.
“We have a busy week right after Thanksgiving,” Coach Burleson closed. “So we got to get after it and try to improve everyday. Every day is a opportunity to get better and that’s the ultimate goal. I’m really excited about this team.”
A fun team to watch as the future becomes brighter with a chance to work and that should come by playing games and learning and improving that Basketball IQ.
Way to Go Lady Hawks!!
