Lady Hawk’s Lose to Hargrave in Game of Hard Knocks, 38-35

Coach Burleson strategizing with CL’s Lady Hawks.

A game of hard knocks will prove to be a great learning tool after suffering a tough outing and a loss to Hargrave, 38-35.

                Way to Go Lady Hawks!

An opponent with senior leadership proved to have just enough fire-power in a back and forth battle that finished with a first place trophy in the Johnson City Tournament.

“This was good for us,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said in commenting about this game. “We needed this play in this type of game. Now we will find out how we bounce back.”

Both teams entered this contest without a loss in this two day event and the game proved to be all that and more with some body blows thrown in for what proved to be a tug of war with both teams having an upper hand as the game unfolded with each quarter having a new leader.

Hargrave was able to nudge their way for a 4 point advantage after that first period, 9-5.

Going into halftime Canyon Lake matched that lead with 4 more points that evened the score at 17 points.

The Falcons had a height advantage and a press that kept CL with just 10 total shots at the basket and a welcomed sight from the free throw line would allow The Lake to make up that deficit.

Nine points from the stripe in that first half while scoring only 3 buckets. Two shots came from beyond the arc and that 2 point basket had Mya Vorhis converting three points the old fashion way with her final point from the line.

Sofia George led the Hawks with 14 points while Maddie Pipkin chipped in 3 assists and steals as both George (42) and Pipkin (44) are climbing up the steal charts being within 30 more to reach the top 10 for a season.

Brynne Beck knocked down a 3 pointer to end the 3rd quarter giving CL a 30-24 lead heading into those last 8 minutes.

Beck is another freshman that has made an impact for this team as she is now holding down 2nd in rebounds for the team with (74) and scoring 50 points.

                    Let’s Go Lady Hawks!!

“We knew they (Hargrave) would be tough,” Beck said. “This game will give us confidence and we will learn what we need to do and we will keep working together.”

On the slow start, “We knew it would be messy but it was a messy aggression,” Beck commented. “We need to learn to take it slower in making decisions…but we will need to be tough and that will help us grow and boost our confidence.”

The Falcons opened that final period scoring the first 7 points in grabbing that lead back in those first 3 minutes. A George 3 pointer stopped the Falcons streak and swung the pendulum back for the Hawks, 33-31 lead.

Then a steal and lay-up for Pipkin with just over 2 minutes remaining would be the final scoring opportunity as Hargrave would erase that last 3 point lead with free throws that helped retake the lead and game with 1:37 left in regulation.

“I needed to slow down and go up strong,” Pipkin said when commenting on her lay-up against the tallest Falcon player waiting for her under their basket.

Maddie Pipkin & Brynne Beck looks to add more wins to season this week.

“Thank God,” What Pipkin said when she finished that lay-up when ball went in.

On where the team is during this time of the season compared to her first two seasons, “Everybody is playing well and I am very excited because this year is a lot more fun. But we still have work to do and we need to just stay calm under pressure.”

Canyon Lake’s competition had not been that stout and having a game of this caliber was just what the doctor ordered even when those hard knocks in this game started forming a bruise.

The good news is knowing those bruises will heal and this young squad will be able to learn how to finish as more games continue this learning curve.

Good signs coming from the charity stripe which will be needed when district comes calling in January.

There will be 6 more non-district games before CL welcomes Wimberley to the Hawk Nest.

Building on each game will be imperative as The Lake will now hope that those hard knocks will have a door-bell installed as their Basketball IQ continues to climb and Canyon Lake answered the door.

Go Hawks!!
