CL Lady Hawk Defense Smother Llano, 40-13
CL Hawks notched their 15th victory using a stifling defense that wore down the Llano Yellowjackets which resulted in a 27 point win, 40-13.
This game was over after the first quarter when The Lake was able to score 15 points that would be 2 more points than their Visitors would amass for this game.
The Hawks scored the first 12 points before a Llano basket with 40 seconds left in that first period of play. Canyon Lake was not a well oiled machine offensively however after shooting 26% from the floor in those next three quarters and that had your Hawks not getting to double digit scoring for those last 3 quarters..
But, with a dominating defense led by an energetic Hawk club, Llano was never in a rhythm after scoring a three-pointer to start that last frame and then going silent until the last minute of play.
The Jackets would not sink a free throw and would finish this game with a 8% shooting touch with 25 tries which would sum up the travails for this opponent.
Mya Vorhis had an off day scoring but made up for that stat by dishing out an assist with 5 steals and 3 blocks while committing just one turnover.
Basketball, like any other sports, will take those minor stats that will help a team when shots are not falling.
This game continued a two game block party with 7 and combined with a 16 steal contest would help in sealing the deal for this last game of 2021 year.
Marley Christian and Ayren Lightfoot were two other Hawks that contributed by doing those ‘other’ round-ball stats that has helped in garnering several wins this season.
When the offense is cold this defense should never take a game off as those battles will many times not translate to the scoreboard.
“I just want to make more shots,” Christian said matter-of-factly. “But I focus on doing those small things,
On how this young club will approach district play next week? “Yeah, we are really young but we will need to have good practices and go into next week by playing our game.”
Lightfoot has been coming on this season as she brings energy and something you can’t teach, height, that should help in going into these upcoming district games.
“I just try to get my hands on the ball and go up,” Lightfoot said when commenting on her inside game. “I still get a little nervous when starting each game but now I am getting more calm.”
Allyshia Menchaca has been through the good-bad and ugly these past couple of years and now finds herself as the elder statesman for this years group.
“We have a lot of freshman and they work hard together which has helped in blending in together with the older girls,” Menchaca stated. “As any game progresses we get more comfortable which has given us confidence in our team play. This team plays hard and we never give up.”
So far that has been the case for a team that is about to leave the calm waters to some much tougher waves as district approaches.
Canyon Lake will take on Fox Tech on Monday and then prepare for Wimberley at home to start the district season. This home game will start at 6:15pm for the varsity while the sub-varsity gets this part of the season going at 5:00pm.
