CL Hawks Boy’s Basketball Struggle in Wimberley Tourney
CL Hawks Boys Basketball did not fare well in their Wimberley tournament last week after suffering 4 losses. That runs CL’s record to, 3-13 and an 8 game losing streak.
The Hawks have 3 more non-district games before district starts against Boerne at home on January 14th. This year’s Greyhounds are currently ranked 9th in the State which will be a high hurdle for this Hawk team to clear.
After a resounding 92-18 win over SA Kipp the Hawks have not scored over 47 points during this 8 game tailspin.
Shooting has not been a very successful endeavor this season as CL is shooting 32% from the floor and 22% from behind the arc. Free throws have been underwater too coming into this week’s games with a 44%.
There has been some highlights with the addition of Griffen Williams putting his sneakers on after the season got underway. Williams leads the team with 128 rebounds while averaging 8 points per outing. That rebound total is 11 more than any Hawk had last year.
Williams is second on the team with 23 assists as this year’s team has spread their assists around after seeing Tyler Pauly dominate that stat these past two campaigns. The Lake has 2 more Hawks over 20 assists with Adrian Duque (29) and Mikey Carrizales (22) doing the trick and having Mario Aguilar next with 19 dishes.
Seven Hawks have 80 or more points which gives an idea of how deep this team has been while averaging 42 rebounds per game and that leads every Hawk team since inception by 9 bounds per game which was last year’s bunch.
That stat might be the cause of this Havoc Offense which specializes in getting turnovers and quick shots.
Another newcomer is big man Kameron Scriber who has been an attribute in the paint along with Williams. Scriber has 111 rebounds and leads the team with 14 blocks.
Canyon Lake is certainly addicted to shots beyond the arc with 467 or 29 per game but a 22% contributes to those added rebounds as the Hawks average 7 makes per game.
All in all, Canyon Lake will need some solid play to compete this season in district. Leaving a lot of points wanting in the paint added with not converting those free throws.
District 28-4A has Boerne with an impressive resume thus far and odds on favorite to finish on top of the heap.
Wimberley (13-3) will be the Greyhounds main challenger with Bandera (15-6) coming into this season with a much improved team.
Fredericksburg (11-10) is still over .500 and will be one of two opponents CL will need to beat for a chance in making a Post-Season Dance.
Davenport will not be an easy team for the Hawks to push around and the battle will come down to these three schools fighting for that last spot.
On the Box Score below, CL faced a different Hondo Owl team than the one played to start this season.
Griffen Williams finished with 5 points and 10 rebounds in his match-up with a mountain man that was tall enough to see eye to eye with an Owl on a tree.
“He was a big kid,” Griffen Williams said when asked bout his opponent. “I knew I would have to play physical.”
On that first quarter shot from half court as the clock showed 0:00? “I just took a couple of dribbles as the bench was counting down the clock and that helped…but I thought I threw it too high.”
Scriber was instrumental in nullifying this big man too with his defense while scoring 5 points and led CL in corralling 11 rebounds.
On his thoughts when he saw who he would be matched up against and what his first impression was.
“Holy Crap!,” Scriber said while looking in the sky. “I had an NBA blackout but I faced him by playing his shoulder. I’m 6’6” and if I would have played him soft I would have played, 5’5”.”
On Scriber’s thoughts on Griffen’s half-court shot? “It looked liked he threw up a brick but he was laser focused.”
The Lake could not stay afloat in this loss as Hondo’s three-point shots were lethal in this loss.
Canyon Lake will finish out their non-district slate with 3 teams with winning records.
