The Hawks started their season with a win over Gonzales after taking advantage of Apaches wildness from the mound by scoring 5 runs on a passed balls while gathering 8 hits in their opener at home, 10-0.

                     Let’s Go Hawks!!

“We have to get better with our hitting,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “We did not make the adjustments and we will have to rely on our fielding and pitching unit our offense comes around.”

On how Coach would put the Baseball Trinity in importance: “Pitching is the most important and then defense (fielding) and then hitting and we are in good shape with those first two right now. But we will just have to prepare to play small ball until our hitting catches up.”

Coach Escamilla proved he could play small ball during hit first campaign as coach at The Lake when he had a team with an overall batting average of .217 but was still able to find a way to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Canyon Lake will gather up their parka’s and head north to Salado for a tournament that will be expecting some cold temperatures. High being the operative word with temps for the 3 day tourney reaching 42 on Saturday and Friday expected to be no higher than 37 degrees.

                    Way to Go Hawks!

In CL’s opener it was once again dominated by pitching with Tanner Schultz winning his 21st game all-time while striking out 11 Apaches and giving up only 3 hits which so happens to be the same number of hits Schultz had for his offensive showing.

“We have good pitching,” Schultz said matter of factly. “But we still need more work with our sticks but we still can play small ball pretty good.”

On the difference between this start and where Schultz was last year? “I have more knowledge on what to throw and where to throw or location.”

Luke Roskin closed the game with a scoreless 6th inning with 2 strikeouts and leaving the visitors very few opportunities to garner any momentum.

But the first inning was a strong start for Gonzales after a strikeout, then they responding with a double, hit batter and single that loaded the bases. Schultz would have his own response striking out the next two batters which squelched their last time having a base runner reach 3rd base.

Meanwhile, Canyon Lake scratched across the only run they would need when Schultz opened the 2nd inning with a rope to Centerfield and courtesy runner Reid Simpson stole home.

The Hawks kept the pressure on with a 2-run 4th after singles when Schultz led off this frame with another hit and a Jeremy Greene and Brayden Welch singles helping to establish some separation with a, 3-0 lead.

During that next inning 3 more hits with a walk for the first 4 batters for another 2 runs and a Hawk, 5-0 advantage.

It was the 6th inning that had the 10 run-rule ending the game as Gonzales became wild Apaches from their pitching mound with CL adding 4 walks and 2 batters reaching first on errors.

And the rest was History and an opening season win and the Hawk’s next opponent with back-to-back games playing Lampasas (11:00am) first and then Texans Baseball Homeschool (1:00pm) before building a fire to keep warm.
