Baseball: CL Hawks Shut-Out Lehman Lobos, 5-0
Canyon Lake secured their 2nd shut-out as well as their 2nd win over Lehman as the Hawks prepare for Dripping Springs to start their Tourney this Thursday at 10am.
“During this time of the year there are no excuses as this is just part of the game we (other teams) are all in the same boat,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said when responding on the lost week and cold weather.
Escamilla’s thoughts on the teams hitting, “They have opportunities to hit the ball and we expect our starters to produce but those players that come in to pinch-hit have a lot more pressure.”
The Lake took advantage with some gifts from their Opponent with this 5-0 win that was complete after that 2nd inning when CL was able to enjoy a 2-run first inning. The Lobos gifted those runs with 2 errors, that combined with a walk that produced the winning runs on this night’s shut-out.
In that next inning Canyon Lake’s Hayden Baker reached base with a base-on-balls and then a Brayden Welch sacrifice bunt would bring Ty Sellers to the plate who hit his first career triple that drove in Baker who then scored on a Chase Anderson double.
Hunter Anderson continued this frame driving in Reid Simpson a pinch-runner for Chase which would be 3 of the 4 hits in this contest during this inning.
Hunter is presently on a 9 game hitting streak and has now reached base safely for his last 15 contests.
That last Hawk hit was a double that came off of Tanner Schultz’s bat and who is presently enjoying a 14 game reaching base safely streak as he continues his high rate of success that is combined after fielding a double play that ended a bases loaded threat for Lehman in the top of the 5th inning.
Sophomore Luke Roskin was the winning pitcher starting this game and working 3 frames and giving up just one hit.
Griffen Williams worked the middle innings before Schultz finished this combined shut-out that continues the dominant pitching that has been present throughout a 4 game scrimmages into this regular season.
Chase Anderson helped the pitchers by stopping 2 Lobos trying to steal 2nd base and one Lobo that was caught trying to reach 3rd base. Chase continues to combine his fielding and hitting that has carried over from last season.
On Chase’s thoughts on controlling base runners, “We usually know when guys will try to steal and we just have to react…We work on throw downs everyday and when they try to reach third base I just have to get up and throw it.”
On how well Chase is batting, “With the addition of Walker (Coach Travis Walker) he has helped with my approach and I knew (on his double) that a fast ball was coming. That was my first instinct and I just try to know the pitches and then I just, ‘got to hunt’.
If hunting season is open then Chase will reach his limit soon and will need to apply for longer lasting license that goes into May this year.
Canyon Lake will be back in action this Thursday when they will see how far along they are after playing a tough Dripping Springs club at 10am and then meet up with San Antonio Lee starting at 1:00pm.
