CL Hawks Track & Field Continues to Improve in 2nd Meet at Canyon Lake Relays
Canyon Lake hosted their Track Meet last Thursday and had more Personal Records (PR’s) set as these athletes prepare for being in their top form when District 28-4A comes calling in April.
“We had a great day to have a track meet,” Head Boys Coach John Barthels commented. “The boys competed and almost everyone’s time improved. We have a long way to go but we had 50 boys competing and that is half the battle….I’m proud of their efforts and look forward in getting better for next week.”
On the lists below, The ReSporter, has grouped the Varsity and Junior Varsity events together. You will see some JV students that finished in the top 6 might be trailing other athletes that competed on varsity.
Lots of names below and still waiting for full or corrected names due to the format available which hurts when a student has a long name which results in missing letters.
The Lady Hawks finished 2nd and had times or distances that moved those Ladies into the Top 10 for their particular performance.
First on that list was Junior Alencia Lentz 12-00.00 pole vault which placed first on this date Jessica Cunningham set the previous record of 11-01.00 back during 2010 so that mark stood for a long time as Cunningham made it to the State Meet that year.
Lentz will certainly have that on her mind as this season continues. Lentz was a move in from Virginia where she had perfected her trade mark pole vault event.
“I started doing the pole vault when I was 13 and had been a gymnast from when I was a baby to 12 years old,” Lentz recounted. “I started pole vaulting in Clovis, New Mexico because I just had to find something to do.”
What prompted the move to Canyon Lake? “My Dad is in the military and we have land at Mystic Shores and I love it here.”
Lentz continued, “Texas has been a good move as I have more competition than I did at Virginia and there was no one there that could give me one-on-one help it was done in groups instead and I have had plenty of one-on-one work since I have come here.”
Do you still remember your first jump? “Yes, before I did it….I just said, ‘Lord Help Me!’ There are so many details in this event and I like to start competition on a comfy jump and it has to be a jump I know I can make it. Then I just focus and then pull the trigger.”
What are your goals this track season? “I want to reach, 13-6 and just stay humble.”
Have you ever been in competition with boys? “No, but I would like to do that and beat boys!!”

Hannah Hammer (another freshman) is making noise this season and will be in an upcoming article on how this year of Freshman Girls have made a great entry into their high school career.
Cadence Patterson continues to lap the field and coming out to watch her run would be a must-do for the Hawk Nation.
Helijah Johnson has upped his game to start track season as he hit the 44 foot mark and has 4 athletes that have better marks and one of them is another present Hawk in Connor Windham who has one spot ahead as these two not only compete in the field but as teammates and that should be a fun back & forth to watch.
Canyon Lake will be competing at Davenport this next week.
Way to Go-Go Hawks!!
