Canyon Lake won a pitching duo against Freddie on Friday scoring a run in the final inning and a stellar showing from Griffen Williams with a Flame-Thrower night and win, 1-0.

Way to take care of the Billies and don’t forget to vote in May for runoff.

That run scored was the first time this season CL scored in the 7th inning and the importance resulted in a victory that will keep the Hawks in a hunt to represent District 28-4A with the most important series coming this week with Boerne.

The Billies pitcher, Threadgill was just as effected striking out 9 Hawks and matching the number of hits given up as Williams with two.

“We hadn’t seen a lefty in a while and that umpire had a wide zone,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said in commenting on reaching just 2 hits. “But that wide strike zone played into Griffen’s strength to because of his two seam fast ball.. But we needed to be better at hitting and I think our players tried to do too much “

Small ball was a mainstay during Head Coach Victor Escamilla’s first season at the reigns at Canyon Lake. That 2018 team had to manufacture runs as hitting was not a forte with a team .215 batting average. This ’18 Hawk team had 8 players with a .200 or lower average at the plate. One triple and no homers.

Texas Country is Proud of CL’s Baseball Team.

Tanner Schultz with a lead off single to start the 7th was followed by a Brayden Welch who kept battling for a walk. Jeremy Greene the other Hawk with a hit reached base after being hit by a pitch loading the bases with no outs.

Enter Cody Jones who had the best no hit at bat with contact to the right side of the diamond allowing Brody Ross a courtesy runner to score what would be the winning run.

“Coach told me to put the ball in play and I got my hands high and was able to get the ball on the ground,” Jones said like the Jones’.

What Jones was thinking, “I knew immediately that we would score and I was excited and I had a chance to help us win.”

Cody Jones’ RBI was all that was needed based on Griffen Williams Dominance pitching!

On how Canyon Lake will approach the next series with the Greyhounds, “We can do good if we can shore up our defense.”

Playing a team rated #2 in the State will have CL needing to excel in not only defense but offensively and from the pitching mound too.

Williams was all that and more on this night only having 3 full counts and none of those results were base on balls. Striking out 10 and having a total of 75 pitches averaged 10.7 throws to the plate per inning and staying power was pristine starting the game with an 8 pitch inning and ending with a win with that same amount of pitches.

“Yeah, my pitching was really on,” Griffen said matter-of-factly. “I was just trying to do my best and we reached getting the sweep.”

What was different about this game in how you attacked the Billies, “I had confidence through the roof and I saw them and how they approached Tanner (Schultz who pitched in that Tuesday contest) so I studied every hitter and by how they went after Tanner.”

Griffen’s homework was turned in on the mound and an A+ would be his final grade with another test coming next week.

Canyon Lake will be at Boerne on Tuesday and then the return will be on Thursday as this next week will be shortened due to being Easter Week.

Way to Go Hawks!!
