CL Hawks Win with a Crappy Good Comeback, 18-14

CL Hawks finish District 28-4A with Win over Davenport, 18-14.

Canyon Lake had their best district record since their District Championship run 4 years ago in amassing the largest come from behind win (11 runs) over Davenport, 18-14.

           Keep Going Strong Hawks!!

“I think we came into the game a little nervous,” Head Coach Haley Galloway stated with a tiring sigh. “I knew we would have to make a couple of plays but I did not want the team to think it had to happen all at the same time because we still had several innings…so chip away and then start playing better defense.”

The Wolves opened up those flood gates during their 2nd inning scoring 12 runs and turning a one run deficit into a 11 run advantage.

Davenport sent 14 players to the plate and produced 5 of their total of 7 hits while getting help from CL’s pitchers and fielders with walks, hit batters and errors.

In fact, The Lake not only had the largest comeback  but now holds the record for most errors in a contest with 10.

                        Let’s Go Hawk!!

Only 5 of the total of 14 runs that DHS had were earned when combined with walks had the Wolves in good shape as this game started that 3rd inning.

Still down by 11 runs the Hawks started chipping away, with a log, scoring 6 runs and in this frame Davenport was helping CL much like your home team helped these Visitors.

Six runs scored using one single off the bat of Alysa Johnson and The Lake could see the shore now being down, 13-8 with 5 innings to make land fall.

Gabby Barnes was in the circle now and would do her best in spreading the Wolves’ hits around leaving 7 players on base and keeping DHS Ladies scoreless.

Meanwhile, Canyon Lake scored a run when Cheyenne Fields entered this game in place of an injured Emma Lane. Fields led off the inning with a single and scored on a passed ball 2 batters later.

From a Freshman Cheyenne Fields to a Senior Madison DeLeon

Barnes would help her own cause with a lead off double in the 5th frame and came home on a Fields double who would then score on a Shelby Porter single that plated two more Hawk runs closing the gap, 12-11.

On knowing you would be entering the game due to an injury Fields fielded, “I was so nervous and I started to get hot but then I just did not think about it and started batting and playing. We were down by a lot but I figured we could come back and then as we started scoring everything started rising.”

Fields entered this game with just one at bat and most of her appearances came in the form as a courtesy runner, “It was, ‘I hope I get a hit’”, Fields said, “I was first pitch swinging and Coach did not want me to do that….she gave me the look but it turned out okay when I got a hit.”

The Hawks would take their second lead since the first inning during the 6th using a Porter double that would add on enough runs to leave Davenport needing 5 runs for a tie and a chance to see another inning.

Porter’s at bat was a 10 pitch affair while fouling off 4 pitches before a one-hopper to left center field, clearing the bases.

“I was just protecting the plate,” Porter said while loading bags for a train. “I really wanted to hit the ball and not go down not swinging.”

When Porter got the hit for a double, “Heck Yeah!! It was a great feeling.”

On how it compares to her homers this season? “Same feeling really….but on how I stayed alive might have made this one better.”

Meanwhile, leaving the bases full for the second straight inning had Davenport leaving the diamond scoring one run and CL able to pull out a come from behind battle and momentum with the post-season looming for next week.

This was Senior Night for Canyon Lake and another Hawk that plays exclusively in the outfield was able to finish her career with a bat too.

                  Hawk Proud!!

Madison DeLeon would make her presence known by reaching base 4 of her 5 times she batted. A single on her first at bat and then two walks and being hit by a pitch. That one time not reaching base was on a called 3rd strike on a high outside rising ball. (Really a Ball but with calling a total of 347 pitches in the 3.5 hour marathon, a fan could surmise, that a strike zone might enlarge by a lot.)

“I was told 30 minutes before the game that I would be batting too,” DeLeon said calmly. “I was nervous but ready and I just wanted to put the ball in play and this became a good win before the playoffs. We started this game crappy but we had a good comeback.”

Crappy might be the word for this article….a Crappy good Game!!

At this writing District 27-4A is crowded with 3 teams still having a chance to finish first and still Friday’s games to finish the regular season.

Way to Go Hawks!!
