Canyon Lake’s first week of practice concluded Saturday. Cuero will be on tap this Friday.
Canyon Lake Football has one week under their belt and now will start preparing for these next two week’s with scrimmages at home against Cuero and Elgin.

The ReSporter caught up with Offensive Coordinator Bill Greene who will be starting his second campaign with this position.
CL Hawks have been a primary run oriented offense since 2013 and that did not change last season after former Offensive Coordinator Troy Moses departed for Nixon-Smiley.
Coach Greene has both feet planted starting this season after suffering a strong bout against Covid this time last year, “I could not stand when practices started last year and when I could….I still did not have my voice.”
That certainly put a kink in CL’s plans as last season was getting started.
This year’s schedule starts with two schools (Wimberley & Fredericksburg) that have faced the slot-t and should give a good idea of what to expect compared to teams that are not used to facing this type of offense.

The Lake had trouble coming out of their half-time session stumbling with sub-par third quarters that erased any lead or momentum those first two quarters had afforded last year’s group.
“Our third quarter was a lot less x-o problems compared to turnovers and penalties,” Coach Greene said. “This year we will be more focused in order to not have those type of lapses. We might have had some complacencies but we will have to get better and pay more attention to details.”
Coach Greene continued, “We have had the whole Spring and Summer…we started installing our offense in July which had not been possible in the past which will help us to diversify….the UIL allowed us to be sport specific after strength and conditioning and during the Spring we could review things and that helped a lot with our players retention.”
That would be the same for those other sports when going to the gym and seeing Head Basketball Coach Monte Cole working with players interested in playing hoops.

On starting the year playing Wimberley? “It is a curse or a blessing because that is a tough opponent to be the first time to face real bullets. The game will give us a chance to do the little things but when you get punched in the mouth it gets real.”
Canyon Lake will be trying to halt a Texan’s 3 game winning streak and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine has our neighbors ranked 7th in the state.
“In our game with Wimberley winning or losing will not make or break our season but we will use this game like our other non-district schedule to be prepared in making the playoffs,” Coach Greene said. “Every team before district are playoff contenders…so the best way to do well in the playoffs is to compete with those type of teams.”
There are comparisons for this year’s team to that 2017 Season that finished district undefeated after winning those battles by double digits.
“That 2017 group did the ordinary things extraordinary good and they were mature,” Coach Greene recalled. “This year’s team are begging for discipline a lot like that 2017 group…..we threw everything at them this week…we doubled up and last year we were just trying to catch-up!”
Texas Country is Proud of Canyon Lake’s Student Athletes.
Coach Greene concluded, “When we get to our Cuero scrimmage (this week) we will see where we are….and this season you will see the most physical and disciplined offense that you have seen in a long time!!”
This Friday the Gobblers’ scrimmage will begin at 5pm with the sub-varsity teams and then around 7pm the Varsity will get going.
