Canyon Lake’s non-district schedule continues with another tough opponent and this week the Hawks are pitted against another strong 5A school in Veterans Memorial.
The Hawks have shown that this year’s bug-a-boo has moved to the first half, of a small sample size, of games played so far. These past two seasons has had CL with a sub-par 4th quarter two years ago and last season that bad quarter had moved to start the 2nd half.
During this campaign those quarters have been the first half with an average of one score per game to start the games and that is not just an offensive problem but CL’s defense has been a slow starter too.
Hence an opening 70 yard touchdown pass last week against Boerne Champion.
The Hawks will need to have a better start if they want to stay up with this week’s Veterans team.
The offense for VM comes from these three letters: RPO (Run Pass Option). The Lake’s defense will have their hands full in containing probably to best running back they have seen thus far in #20 James Peoples. This back has speed out the wazoo and will make a team pay big time if a missed tackle or not being fast enough to get to the edge comes calling.
There would be very few players that, even with an angle, could catch this back. Conversely, 6’2 200 lbs QB Chris Irving will punish a defense as well with keepers up the middle as opposing defenses keys on Peoples.
A one-two punch that has been keeping the clock operators busy adding points to those scoreboards with a lofty 47 points per game average.
This game would remind, old timers, of a game played 11 years ago against Sealy that CL won, 38-34 as that Hawk crew was able to get just enough defensive stops and used a player named Zach Henshaw to cancel out that Tiger offense. This is another tough 5A school that will give CL all they want with another learning experience as this leaves just one more battle (with a 6A school) before district starts.
Coach Drum crafted one of the toughest pre-district schedules which will hopefully prepare this team for a bigger reward when those games, that will count. for another post-season.
These past few seasons those playoff games have come as a lower seeded team and this schedule will allow CL to go further when those tougher 4A schools come to the horizon.
Hopefully, Canyon Lake can make this Homecoming a festive occasion with a bright future in 3 weeks.
Let’s Go Hawks!!
