Mountain Valley’s 7A Football Team Leaves NBMS Short in Win, 16-14
Mountain Valley’s 7thA squad ran their season record to, 2-0 after wearing down the NBMS Unicorns in their 16-14 win.
The Hawks first drive went 59 yards using 10 plays and was culminated on an Archer Miller 8 yard run with less than 2 minutes left in that opening quarter.
That was followed by a 5 play and punt sequence for New Braunfels MS as they came up short on a 4th down and needing 3 yards. MV’s iron curtain left these Unicorns 2 yards short and a change of possession.
Mountain Valley came up short on their next drive that took up the rest of the 2nd quarter but having the lead going into halftime after being left just short by 8 yards for a momentum boosting TD.
NB opened their 2nd half with a 2 play 54 yard drive that was highlighted when running back #41 took the ball 47 yards right up the gut and with a two point conversion had this contest tied, 8-8.
MV answered that call with a 7 play 55 yard drive which was capped off with by a QB Knox Ford pass to Jace McGoldrick that was converted for 2 points and what would be the winning margin in this affair.
“Archer (Miller) had some good runs going outside and so did Brayden (Sullivan) our fullback and he did good running,” QB Ford said when responding on MV had success during their long drives.
“They are always open on that play because Jace (McGoldrick) runs it so well,” Ford continued when asked bout that important two point pass for the conversion and win.
On what was the biggest attribute? “My team and our offensive line!”
These Unicorns did score with 4:52 left in that final period but their 2 point try was short leaving MV with a precarious, 16-14 advantage.
With little time left, MVMS milked the clock down to one minute remaining on the Unicorns 36 yard line.
That left New Braunfels with one last chance for a score and win.
A first play sack by Lavella Westyn for MV turned to be a huge play taking precious seconds off the clock while these visitors scrambled to get another snap off. The Unicorns were out of timeouts. The clock was the Hawks greatest friend as time ran out on NB’s final pass play leaving them 17 yards short and a Hawk win.
“Coaches said wide and out and I just smacked the guys hands out of the way and wrapped up,” Westyn stated when recalling that pivotable play in the waning moments in this win.
Key events leading to a win will continue to improve as this season continues next week at Smithson Valley.
MV won last week over Pieper and will now prepare SVMS on the road next Tuesday, September 27th starting at 4:30pm.
