Canyon Lake will be facing a foe this week that quite frankly are quacky based on deciphering what you might see this Friday on Senior Night at the Hawk Nest.
A team that played Davenport to the last play in a 3 point loss and then scoring 13 points in a loss to Lampasas and losing by 29 points.
Four games of not reaching a 30 point plateau and four games with 40 or more points scored gives you a team that will be hard to judge.
History for this match-up had Taylor ducking all the blows CL could muster and started this series on a 3 game losing streak. Those losses came in a variety of ways starting with that first contest on the road that had the Hawks losing on a field goal that was just short.
Yes, there was a 5 yard penalty when The Lake did not realize the clock was running after a time-out and then flagged on a delay of game. The field-goal was missed by less yardage than that penalty.
One more note was knowing Taylor came into this contest winless for those players needing to know and stay focused for this game should be a top priority regardless a team’s record.
The unforgettable next year’s game that the word, ‘Fumbleitis’ , was coined when the Hawks had a lead, 29-9 at halftime before …. Fumbles allowed the visitors a comeback win.
Taylor outscored CL, 22-0 in that loss that had 5 lost fumbles and The Lake’s 2nd loss to these Ducks.
In that last loss to Taylor in 2015 happened on a Senior Night and CL enjoying a, 30-14 halftime advantage. This affair would crown the winner as the district champion.
Taylor would proceed to the finish line…. by outscoring the Hawks, 36-14 and another disappointing loss, 50-44.
All of this to chronicle that each game stands alone and nothing is a given. Taylor reminded CL of that lesson for 3 straight seasons.
Now this year Canyon Lake should have the advantage but Taylor will find a way to keep ‘ducking’ to keep from being knocked out.
Offensively, Taylor has a trio of players that should have The Lake’s attention.
Receiver Jarvis Anderson who averages 79 yards per game and has speed to burn.
Running Back, Andrias Fisher has averaged 92 yards and also has speed that burns.
QB Ryan Valdez has thrown for 5 touchdowns and 385 yards in district play. The Duck’s offense is averaging 28 points against two of the best offenses thus far.
Linebacker Jackson Meller is averaging over 10 tackles per outing and Linebacker Colbey Solis is right at 10 tackles for a good one-two punch defensively.
Taylor has shown a weakness in the teams run defense giving up 278 yards per district outing. That should play into CL’s strengths. The Hawks have a district average of 368 yards.
Canyon Lake is top in total defense (282 yds) and rushing defense (106.7 yds) and that has been a winning hand this district season as the defensive side of the ball continues to be good at keeping opponents out of the end-zone giving up 18.7 points per game.
Now, if Canyon Lake can take in those previous Taylor games when the game was in sight but a poor finish during those set-backs then being focused for a full game will be needed to realize a victory.
Go Hawks and get that winning streak to 6 games against these Ducks!!
