CL Hawk Basketball Beat Hondo, 63-62
Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball held on for a one point win over Hondo, 63-62.
The bad news was corralling only 4 offensive rebounds but the good news was shooting a spectacular 59% from the floor which would give a good excuse on the amount of offensive rebounds needed for a win.
“We played a good offensive but we still have work to do defensively,” Head Coach Monte Cole surmised. “We’re not going to score like that in every game and a better defense does not depend on shooting well.”
On the play of Mario Aguilar? “He worked his butt off on the court and in the weight room and you could see how that has helped his confidence….he will give me flexibility with his ability to play any position on the floor.”
Aguilar was red hot shooting 100% from behind the arc and finished with a decent (with sarcastic voice) 81% for the game. Aguilar wasn’t finished as he led the Hawks with 7 rebounds and finished with 2 blocks.
Speaking of blocks, Tolan Stromquiet with 3 blocks that led the team that finished with 7 total blocks showing good hustle throughout this contest.
In that first quarter The Lake’s largest lead (15-11) after an Aguilar basket with an assist from Dalton Stromquiet.
The Owls would storm back in the 2nd period shooting to a 6 point lead, 36-30 going into halftime. This period had Hondo outscoring CL, 9-3 in those final 3 minutes.
Aguilar would make his presence known coming out of half-time with a smooth 3 pointer that helped get the Hawks going after Hondo still had an 8 point lead early on, 41-33.
It was a back and forth battle for much of that 3rd quarter and Hondo would still hold an 8 point advantage, 48-40 right before going into that final 8 minute stretch.
Canyon Lake would get contributions from several players but it was a Garrett Spruiell 3 point make that gave the Hawk’s lead back, 52-50 with still over 6 minutes to play. This was during a Hawk 9-0 run.
Spruiell’s 10 points joined Aguilar as the two Hawks who finished with double digit scoring in this win.
Hondo would go scoreless for over 3 minutes and battled for a 7 point lead, 59-52.
Then a furious comeback that would get this game in an every possession being clutch.
And it was playing a good defense to bring this win for the good guys.
Canyon Lake’s next home date will be December 6 when the Llano Yellowjackets come to the Hawk Nest.
