A Canyon Lake Flood of 6 Athletes Sign-Up for College

Andrew Miller, Helijah Johnson, Sonny Bentley, Maddie Olberholtzer, and Emily Pena (missing Brett Harwell) were all smiles knowing that their future is just starting. Congrats!!

Canyon Lake had a flood of students take pen in hand to reward colleges with their signature in hopes of continuing their sport at the next level after a 2 day ice delay last Friday.

Coach Kim Clemens was proud of two student athletes in Emily Pena & Maddie Olberholtzer.

There were 5 Hawks with one delaying for Monday due to that dastardly ice spell that engulfed the Lake area last week increasing to 6 students. So 6 students in all with another 2 Seniors that signed last Fall (Griffen Williams-Blinn in Baseball & Alencia Lentz-Baylor in Track & Field)

Adding those 2 has CL with their most signing in history and representing several sports.

Football-Volleyball-Girls Soccer along with the ones mentioned above with Baseball & Track.

Maddie Olberholtzer will take her soccer skills to Concordia with still an important season going on right now with CL’s Soccer team with hopes of taking another step during post-season play.

Emily Pena who reached new heights this season on the Volleyball Court breaking several Hawk records will be attending East Central Oklahoma which has an up and coming program.

Defensive Lineman of the Year in district was Andrew Miller who now has plans in playing for Wayland Baptist in New Braunfels. On if he would be playing the same position in College, Miller indicated that the coaches might use him as a linebacker.

Miller made a statement that you do not have to be a mountain man to play on the defensive line and being voted as lineman of the year attests to that achievement.

Helijah Johnson left a lot of marks during his time at The Lake as there should be many opposing players glad this wrecking ball running back/linebacker will no longer be that person giving out tattoos the hard way without the painkillers.

Johnson will taking his tattoo shop to Mary Hardin Baylor a mainstay each year in the hunt for a National Title.

Brett Harwell will have an opportunity to block or at least be on the same team as Johnson as he too will be enrolling into Mary Hardin Baylor. Harwell will have his signing on Monday as the weather delayed his signature.

Harwell played on CL’s offensive line along with another Hawk, Sonny Bentley who was being courted by Tarleton State and then his future coach took a job at Sul Ross State in Alpine.

Sul Ross will be upping their competition as they will be leaving NCAA III to NCAA II as a scholarship institution.

Both of these lineman were adept in plowing opposing defenses for Hawk runners like Johnson during their high school days. Now those pancakes have a chance of tasting much better.

Canyon Lake still has a chance to see these athletes as several are still using their talents in other sports.

Track & Field will certainly be one arena to get some more time to enjoy their high school careers.

It has been a fun ride with the overall goal of using this time in life to excel in the class room as decisions you make at the next level will and can dictate your future.

You can catch these Hawks on The ReSporter’s Twitter and Instagram.

Way to GO HAWKS!!
