Track & Field Next Stop: Region April 28-29
Canyon Lake’s Ladies Track & Field will need a large people mover for their transportation to the Region Meet while this year’s Boys Track team will be using a unicycle.
First off, CL’s Boys did not have a banner season and placed one relay and Pole Vaulter Coby Mickey qualifying for the recent Area Meet.
Mickey came through in grand fashion finishing 1st while the Hawk’s Relay placed 6th which would halt anymore participants for this year’s Region Meet.
This is the smallest contingent for CL not counting that first season of competition when the Hawks had no Seniors that first year at The Lake.
The good news has Mickey on a quest for making his 2nd appearance at the State Meet, but the competition at Region will have some tough competition.
Speaking of this same event, had Alencia Lentz taking her main event with hopes of also having a repeat in getting to Austin. (Freshman) Shana Cutrer had her vault of 9 feet and if she would have had her pr this season then she too would be at Region.
Lentz vaulted for a 1st Place trophy last season and has hopes for another chance to make that trek to The University of Texas.
Lentz will also have a repeat on this year’s 4×400 relay which was another event that performed in Austin last season.
Lentz will be joined with Ayren Lightfoot, Hannah Hammer and Aubrey Avey in Kingsville in that relay.
Cadence Patterson and Savanna Olberholtzer will have double duty at Region as both students participating in two events.
Patterson qualified in those long distance endeavors (1600 & 3200 meter) and had her personal best in the 1600m run lowering that Hawk All-Time record with a 5:19.06 finish.
That time beat her previous best by 4 seconds and she now will have her name at the top of this event a long time since the 2nd best was Kaitlyn Yuill who ran a 5:51.57 back during her 2017 season.
In the 3200 race, Patterson had a best of 11:43.35 mark performed last season. Patterson will be able to compete in two events which will help without adding more events to her menu. That personal best was a minute faster than what Mariah Ellis (12:45.43) finished with during her 2015 campaign.
Olberholtzer had a fantastic Freshman season by scoring in double figure in each meet and will perform in two Field Events (Long-Jump & Triple-Jump) this week.
She also had a personal best in her specialty (Long Jump) and beat her previous, through the air, jump going, 18-2.57 feet.
Olberholtzer stands with a 4th best triple jump as she closes in on some other good TP’ers back in the day.
TOP 5 TRIPLE JUMPERS Marisa Ellis 37-04.50 2012 Made State in this Event Bailey Drum 37-01.00 2016 Skylar Hurst 36-01.50 2018 Savanna Olberholtzer 35-02.25 2023 Sofia George 34-04.00 2022
Ayren Lightfoot also will be adding an open 400 m dash to her relay event at Region.
Lightfoot (59.59) has had Light Feet with this event after breaking the 60 second barrier this season and has joined Skylar Hurst (58.28 in 2017) as the only two Hawks to accomplish this feat (see what The ReSporter did there?).
Hannah Hammer will add a 800 meter run to her relay, as she too, has her name at the #1 spot on CL’s All-Time list. Hannah laid the Hammer with a run of 2:22.62 this season with hopes of placing higher at Region.
Claire Schroeder is another current Hawk with a #1 dash for the 300 m hurdles and will try to top her personal best of, 46.68 which can hopefully place her in Austin.
Aubrey Avey (another Freshman) has made the foursome on that 4×400 m relay team and has performed in several events this season. Now a chance to run just one event which can many times have an advantage for athletes when focusing on that one chance for going to Austin as a Hawk team repeat.
A side-note had CL’s 4×100 relay finishing (49.92) just out for a chance for Region but this foursome of McKenzie Ortez, Lentz, Schroeder and Olberholtzer did finish with an All-Time Hawk best breaking that 50 second barrier.
These Hawk Athletes will be in action at Javelina Stadium at Texas A&I in Kingsville this April 28-29.
The ReSporter will have a final Track article with all the marks for this year’s group of ladies, so stay tuned.
Way to GO FAST, JUMP FAR, & VAULT HIGH Hawks!!
