Hawk’s Defense Will be Work in Progress

Just 3 weeks before season starts!! Go Hawks!!

Canyon Lake Football will have a chance for repeating as the District Champions after last year’s team raised a conquering flag with an unblemished district record.

                         Let’s Go Hawks!!

Achieving that goal will not be an easy task after seeing 27 Seniors graduating and leaving many holes to be filled this season.

The ReSporter will have a 3 article series with Head Coach Charley Drum with a more in depth evaluation of the offense & defense.

Now for a look at what CL’s Defense might have in store for this upcoming season.

Defense will have more returning with starting experience with linebackers Dylan Wunderlich and Michael Anderson at that important position.

“We will have more experience at linebacker with an immediate impact from Wunderlich and Anderson and we will use Trevin (Cutrer) as a hybrid safety and bring in Sophomore Eli Hammons as that third linebacker,” Head Coach Drum interjected.

“Safety and defensive backs will be a bigger question for us,” Coach stated. “Carter (Williams) will be coming back and that will be good.”

                                  Go Hawks!!

On what the coaches will be looking for to fill out the rest of CL’s backfield, “We will be watching for players that will not let their eyes wander and guys with a great feel and have good hips.”

New Defensive Coordinator, Bret Hodges offered his thoughts as well.

“In high school you build your defense around personnel,” Coach Hodges started. “Defense is situational football as the offense is dictating. If you can stop what an offense wants to do then that would be our goal.”

Special teams can contribute with turnovers but the crux of this part of the game is usually dictated on the defensive side of the ball.

Go Hawks & Check out our Hawk Room!

Those turnovers are just based on interceptions and fumbles but Coach Hodges gave another thought on what he thinks a turnover would be, “Our team goal for take-aways is two a game but we would take a great satisfaction stopping a 4th down play.”

“The most important thing about football is that if you don’t possess the ball then you can’t score,” Coach Hodges finished. “We will hunt the ball this year!”

The first week has finished and CL will start this week with pads before going to Cuero for a 7:00pm start Friday, August 11th.

Football is (at this writing) 3 weeks before The Lake starts their season.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
