CL Hawk’s Cuero Scrimmage Finished Well

The Hawk Trenches played well in Hawk’s Cuero scrimmage!!

Canyon Lake’s first scrimmage against Cuero had a plethora of takes you could deduce as a fan looks at the upcoming season.

Let’s Have Another Great Season Hawks!

The ReSporter will start this with an analogy taken from a 3-part series done with Head Coach Charley Drum during the summer months.

There are people who can make a masterpiece from wrapping a present which is something The ReSporter is not capable of doing. During Christmas time during this wrapping extravaganza would give an appearance for the said recipient of what this present would look like feeling when opened.

By looking at that present and seeing tape everywhere with wrinkles etc. would not give a great impression.

Such was CL’s first part of their scrimmage on Friday. The Pre-Season Ranked Cuero was not hindered much from either side of the Hawk ball.

Hit Man says Hit’em Hard Hawks!!

As the Gobbler’s pretty much did whatever they wanted for this hapless out of sync Hawk team. Yes, there were some good plays sprinkled in for the offense and defense but as a whole, for those Canyon Lake faithful who made the jaunt to Cuero, you could only comment on how well The Lake looked during their warm-ups.

Scrimmages give Coaches a snap shot of what will need to be worked on for the next two weeks before the real games begin.

This scrimmage would show an allotted number of plays for 1st & 2nd teams for more than an hour of test tubing with players so that snapshot would not be blurry for those next week’s of practices.

                     Let’s Go Hawks!!

Then, a 12 minute live scrimmage would be the final action before this scrimmage would come to a close.

So, to recap, The Lake did not look good for the first portion of this scrimmage.

That was when the CL Faithful found out that foraging thru those wrappings it did reveal that the box that contained said present looked pretty nice. Yes, Canyon Lake would change all those forgettable previous plays into a well oiled machine by finishing on top by with a, 14-12 finish.

What does that say bout the upcoming season?

There is hope that this group of players can turn a 12 minute quarter into 3 more for what could be some good outcomes for a tough pre-district schedule.

The Lake did start the 12 minutes of live action giving up a 60 yard pass play and quick Cuero lead, 6-0.

     Canyon Lake ‘Hawk’ Proud!!

Canyon Lake would respond when QB Steven Crowder found Harris Gilliam on a slant play that had CL needing just 9 yards for their first score and lead after Jayden Van Ausdall extra point was true.

The Lake caused a fumble on the Gobblers next possession that CL turned into another touchdown with two plays that stood out.

1) A James Garza 25 yard run that had every Gobbler trying for a tackle but Garza had a stiff arm that put a Gobbler on the Thanksgiving table before being stopped knocking on the door for another payday.

2) That was accomplished when a Crowder roll out found Gilliam for another touchdown and Hawk, 14-6 lead.

            GO HAWKS & Beat Wimbo!!

The Hawks did give up another score but Cuero could not get a 2pt conversion which would prove to be the difference.

This game ended with a defensive stop before running out the clock for this win, 14-12.

That wrapped present was a terrible first look but once CL was able to tear that paper up the waiting present was adorned in a beautiful box.

Now as the August practices continue…the Hawks will find out what might be in that box when they meet a good Elgin team next week on the road.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
