Hawks Run out of Ammunition in Loss to Champion, 42-20.
Canyon Lake ran out of ammo in loss to Boerne Champion as turnovers and pass defense allowed explosive plays that gave the Chargers enough space for this 22 point victory, 42-20.
When asked bout the part of the game where the Hawks had a chance to make the contest a one score affair Head Coach Charley Drum responded, “Yeah, we asked them at half-time, you know we turned the ball over and made some mistakes that put us in a hole. But in the 3rd quarter we did win, 7-0 but to their (Champion) credit they hit some big plays on us and we kinda ran out of ammunition.”
Coach continued, “I’m proud of the kids and these are the reasons we play teams like this, a very good 5A team and when district comes we will be battle tested.”
On having to play further down the pecking order of players due to injuries, “Yeah, I’m proud of those guys….we moved some guys up from the JV (Junior Varsity) that played a lot tonight and that will pay dividends down the road and a lot of guys who had not played a lot in the first two weeks got to play a lot tonight against a quality 5A…the scoreboard may not show it but we are getting better.”
The Lake lost a ton of talented in the class of 2022 and knew coming into this season that the depth from those last two campaigns would not be the same for this time around.
Add the amount of Hawks that were in street clothes due to nursing bruises, etc…did show some encouraging plays during this battle.
The Chargers charged out of the gate with 3 quick scores and staked a, 21-0 advantage but from there this was a even-steven affair yardage wise. Those turnovers led to a direct score on an interception and a fumble by CL after moving to Champion’s 18 yard line before half.
Erase those two plays and this team would have been right in the thick of things.
But a Charger team had a well coached defense along with an offense that took advantage of those mistakes and that was the difference between where BC is compared to your Hawks during the first third of this season now completed.
Bright spots for CL’s defense came from two jar boned sacks by Sophomore Linebacker Eli Hammons and Senior Trevin Cutrer. Those two plays had both sides of the stands with that….’Ohhhhhh’ sound in chorus.
Trailing by a 3 scores, the Hawks, were able to respond driving 70 yards in 10 plays for a score and a two touchdown deficit, 21-7. This drive was capped off with a Justin Abbott 15 yards to pay dirt run.
Then another Hawk 70 yard drive this time coming out of halftime and took 8 plays that had Caden Rodriguez stepping off a 25 & 32 yard running plays that let to his 3 yard up the middle score giving a glimmer of hope and a, 28-14 deficit.
With the defense stopping the Charger ‘s…CL next drive went 43 yards drive but stalled at Champions 37 yard line. But that glimmer of hope for the Good Guys was quickly doused when the Visitors took two pass plays with the last going for 86 yards and a comfortable lead in tow, 35-14.
Rodriguez finished this game with 160 yards on 17 carries and a respectable 337 yards via a ground game for the team. The Lake had 5 other players with 21 or more rushing showing an always deep stable of Hawks with their run game.
CL’s passing was anemic for the most part with the longest play being a Carter Williams’ 9 yard catch for a first down.
Playing a team with numbers on the sideline was too much and there will not be much time to rest as these Hawks will travel to San Antonio next Friday to take on another 5A school in Veterans Memorial.
Running out of ammunition might mean the Hawks will need larger ammo that can lead to a bigger win!!
Heal Up and Go Hawks!!
