CL Hawks Volleyball Finish Off Billies, 3-1
CL Hawk’s Volleyball finished in beating Fredericksburg, 3-1 in District 27-4A play at the Hawk Nest on Tuesday night. This was the Hawks first win during a round robin district slate and the Billies swept CL during that first round showing an improvement this group of ladies have achieved as this season has matured.
Seeing how CL did in this contest based on those first games back in August what might have happened? “We would have had a few more wins under our belt for sure in pre-district and district,” Head Coach Dani Villareal prognosticated. “It’s not just about improving physically but we put emphasis on improving mentally as some of our losses have been because we beat ourselves. But these girls are learning a lot from their success and struggles.”
The Hawks came out of the gates on fire leading throughout in that first set by controlling the nets and taking advantage of several Fredericksburg errors in a, 25-12 romp.
These Billies did respond in that second set after both teams were trading blows and knotted at 13 all before FHS went on a 6 point rally to get enough space and finish with a, 25-21 win and back to a one to one standstill.
It was that 3rd set when CL broke another close contest as the Hawks had forged out to a, 16-12 advantage before a Freddie comeback had these Billie Goats having a dominant, 10-2 run and knocking at the door to go up 2-1 with a 22-18 lead.
“I wasn’t stressing,” Coach Villarreal remembered. “I believed in our girls to keep battling. We actually were lucky Fredericksburg bailed us out a few times with missed serves, so that helped keep us within close range. We did a great job playing well rounded as a team and our offense did a great job stepping it up with 48 kills!”
The Lake would finish with a 7-1 run and a pivotal win that put the Hawks up 2-1 and in the driver’s seat.
That final set your Hawks enjoyed their largest lead, 9-4 before being reeled in with a 4 point rally bringing this back to an instant classic and a close, 9-8 Hawk lead.
Canyon Lake would not trail the rest of the way but these Billies were able work a tie, 18-18 and 19-19 before a Brooklynn Andrews kill got a lead that would continue for a final set and match wining point, 25-21.
Lisa Montoya led CL with 18 assists with Chloe Gray contributing 13.
Kylie Rodriguez (22), Krissie Feller (21), and Huntleigh Morast (10) led in that Dig department.
Haley Eckert finished with 13 kills followed with Morast and Rodriguez each with 11.
Montoya and Rodriguez both led CL securing 3 aces in this victory.
It was The Lake’s first district win which showed that this Hawk team has a chance to be a spoiler that other district foes cannot afford to sleep on.
Congrats and Way to Go Hawks!!
