Hawks Start & End Flowing in Overtime Win over Texans, 63-56
Canyon Lake’s ebb and flow contest with Wimberley turned out an overflow of good vibes after outscoring the Texans, 11-4 in an overtime win to open district play.
Dalton Stromquist was the Tall Man on the Wimberley Campus pulling out a double-double scoring 19 points and finishing with 13 rebounds.
“We came out aggressive and played with a lot of energy,” Head Coach Monte Cole stated. “Jacob (Holland) and Dalton (Stromquist) really got us going with scoring early on.”
The Lake started on fire running out to a, 9-2 advantage in those first 3 minutes to start this contest and finished the first stanza with an 11 point advantage, 23-12.
This ebb and flow affair started with some much needed flow but that ebb moment presented itself in that second quarter as these Texans outscored CL by 10 points but the Hawks still enjoyed a close to the vest, 33-32 lead.
Ebb has been a more constant occurrence this season coming out of the halftime locker room and Ebb did not disappoint after scoring just 7 points and seeing Wimbo enjoying a 7 point lead heading to that final quarter leading, 47-40.
WHS largest lead of 8 points (48-40) came at the 7:53 mark early in that 3rd quarter after a free shot that had CLHS in their Ebbness as Wimberley continued on a 16-7 run during this 2nd half of play.
But Flow was about to make an entrance after a 10 minute hiatus when Josh Rowe sank a 3-pointer in the corner after a pass from Carter Williams which helped The Lake open up their scoring after that stellar first period scoring 23 points.
Wimberley was still able to keep their Flow experience working their lead back to 7 points with 5 minutes left in this contest but Ebb’s entrance for the Texans would be brutal after being shut-out for the last 5:07 of this quarter.
Canyon Lake would reap that Flow experience when Williams scored off a Jaxson Jeter assist (Jeter finished with 6 assists) then Jeter was good on one of two free throws.
Wimberley was still holding onto a 6 point lead, 52-46 after that free throw when the Williams-Jeter score and assist Flowed-Up again cutting the Texans’ lead, 52-48 with 3:19 remaining.
CLake would work this game to a one possession affair when Christian Cheatham found Stromquist in the paint and a two point game with 2:01 left….then Cheatham was not cheated after another assist from Williams and now a tied game at 52 all. The clock still had 1:21 remaining but Ebb’s persona was evident for the remainder of regulation play.
With Ebb and Flow being that main ingredient for this contest the question would arise of which side of the court would Flow and Ebb sit on which bench.
The Lake was able to fill their bench leaving no room for Ebb after scoring 11 points with 3 baskets before Wimbo was able to break the ice with 2 free throws and Canyon Lake still up by 4 points, 58-54.
Some great plays during that sequence when Stromquist was able to draw a charge which led to a Cheatham make after an assist from Jeter. Stromquist would finish his aggressive play after cleaning up with his 7th offensive rebound that gave CL an 6 point lead, 58-52.
Flow was still going strong when a Jeter steal led to free shot makes for Holland and a Hawk, 60-54 lead with 57 seconds left in overtime.
Cheatham scored his final two points on a short jumper for a 6 point advantage which had Ebb looking very content on the Wimberley bench with just 22 seconds remaining.
Flow took a high five enjoing an 11 point scoring output in overtime as the score read, 63-56 Hawks!
“We knew they would go on some runs and needed to navigate through those,” Coach Cole surmised when asked bout the ebb and flow of this game. “It took everyone playing and contributing until the end. We got stops in scores late in the 4th when we needed them and in OT continued our momentum….we made 5-6 free throw in overtime!”
This game had Williams back in the line-up and CL’s bench strength contributed in this win after Holland suffered a hand injury after starting this game on fire from beyond the arc.
Holland was able to return in overtime which help give Canyon Lake a player that is able to make free throws.
Coach Cole commented when he mentioned that Holland told him, ‘Coach, I won’t be able to really shoot, but I can play defense!’ “Love that kid. All he wants to do is win!”
Three players reached double digit scoring and six players dishing out assists in this win and Flow by showing up to start and end this game would get the game ball and hopefully will be in attendance next Tuesday when CL meets Navarro at the Hawk Nest.
Way to Go Hawks!!
