Canyon Lake’s ‘JV’ Team wins first two games in Baseball

The baseball team this year has gone back in time…..remember two years ago, when the CL teams oldest players were juniors?

Well, this season the baseball team we have, has gone back two years for both the Varsity and JV. Yes, the varsity does have some seniors playing, but the bulk of the players are sophomores on the varsity team.

Now, you know the problem that faces the Junior Varsity team this season. On many teams the sophomores would be playing, but that group of guys now the word freshman outside their name instead.

Yes, the JV team does have Josh Flores playing, but he would be considered the ‘old’ man on the roster as he is actually a Junior. The JV have a total of 12 freshman, 3 sophomores, and Flores.

This has translated into games that were not as competitive for the younger Hawks. Last Monday the team won their first two games against Navarro and with the wins the maturation period has taken root.

“Up unto this point of the season we have played segments of the baseball game, but not all of one,” new ‘Dad’ and Head Coach Brian Owens said. “These were the first games where we put it all together….making routine plays and getting guys on base.”

Several players caught the eye of the Coach Owens in the games last week.

T.J. Jones pitched and anchored second base and Bryce Dehlin playing catcher, who had .600 batting average in the two games, “stepped up”, their game according to Coach Owens.

Both games found the JV playing from behind and won with the last at bat in winning 5-4 and then recovering from a two run deficit and racing to a 6-3 win in the second game.

“JJ Nance who had not had a lot of practice in the outfield did very well,” Coach Owens reiterated.

The Hawks JV will take anything that results in something positive at this point of the season. Much like the Hawks did three years ago and they were playing teams that had more experience.

We all know that with some patience, then this will be a good learning experience for the JV as they will relish the chance for victories and not take any type of game for granted.

The results will be in the future, much like the ‘new’ son in the Owens family, you can only look in the eyes and wonder where the kids are going to take you….no matter if you are 14 years of age or two weeks.

Both will bring excitement to the Coach and fans for the future. (we can hardly wait)
