============================================
Somerset comes into this contest with some payback after suffering a loss to Canyon Lake last season. Both teams finished last year tied with Fredericksburg with 4-2 records after each school suffered a loss to Davenport.
CLake already avenged their loss to Freddie last week and that will be Somerset’s goal this week.
In that one loss to McCollum had Somerset losing the turnover battle 3-0 which helped in that loss. The Bulldogs had a balanced offense with 156 rushing and 186 passing.
Somerset’s defense gave up 215 yards on the ground against this run oriented offense who went to the air just 8 times.
Last week Somerset opened district play against Uvalde and were right at 200 passing yards and a respectable 124 yards on the ground. John Alvarez returned to the lineup last week and led the team with 86 yards on 19 carries.
Senior Joe Torres leads in season rushing garnering 221 yards thus far as he took up the slack while Alvarez did not play.
Senior Kaleb Flores has passed for 947 yards averaging 190 per game with 14 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Flores go to receiver will be #44 Malakai Iverson who averages 112 receiving yards for 21 yards per catch and 12 touchdowns.
An interesting tidbit was seeing how Uvalde was able to rack up 298 yards passing against Somerset last week after the Coyote’s were only able to amass 74 yards against Fredericksburg the week before.
You can check out those team stats below for Somerset which is based much like The Lake this season where a passing game has been the most consistent way of moving the ball.
And as always, Let’s Go Hawks!
