Baseball: Hawks say Hello to the Win Column
Canyon Lake has finally gotten the taste of winning and the savoring might not be
over as District 26-3A starts to rev into high gear. The Hawks beat the Panthers from Navarro, 6-1 with some outstanding pitching from Logan Felch last Wednesday night.
Felch was the hard luck pitcher against Bandera in the district opener when he gave up one run in the loss.
In the Navarro game, Felch gave up four hits and struck out 10 Panthers while just walking one batter. Pretty impressive game from the mound.
“This game makes us feel a lot better in getting our first district win,” Felch pitched in. “Things are starting to row for us…this team has got a little more fight and has more of a positive attitude this year.”
The Hawk Defense was another reason for the ease in which the game transpired.
“That is a good feeling,” Felch commented on how well the defense played tonight.
Third-Baseman Dylan Adams was nails, taking two hard hits that could of been doubles or triples if not for his sure hands and great reflexes.
“It just feels better and shows I play third base better,” Dylan Adams said. “He (Felch) lets me know I did a good play.”
And a game ending double play did not go unnoticed by the Coaches and certainly not Felch.
Bad news? The run for Navarro was a homerun, that was hit after two outs. The streak of two out runs against the Hawks is now at 17 runs.
That is right, the last 17 runs against Canyon Lake have been after two outs have been recorded by the defense.
The Hawks continue to show signs of improvement and having many weapons opposing teams can’t take for granted.
Speed was evident, with Danielle Camarillo beating out a routine infield ground balls into hits, along with Kyler Huff and J. J. Nance.
Those three athletes play in the outfield and have also helped in chasing down balls to help a pitcher’s era.
“I just try to put the ball on the ground or in play,” Lead-off hitter Camarillo started. “Then I just run as fast as I can.”
Michael Brady caught another baserunner stealing, which will also help as the season matures and giving opposing coaches more to think about in their dugout.
Travis Walker continues to swing a very hot bat, as the Junior first baseman had two doubles and finished three for three from the plate. Walker has a .469 batting average for the season and a slugging percentage of .719.
“I’m in the (batting) cage a lot,” Junior Walker said. “Me and my Dad hit a lot…it allows me to work on my form and seeing the ball.”
Maturity is the key word as this season continues and how these young players react and respond to the adversity as well as the good times.
Coach Trent Dunavant is still not finished tinkering with the lineup, and the 10 hit game helped raise the team batting average from .224 to .238…waiting for your young child to walk will soon lead to waiting to see them run.
“It did tonight,” Dunavant said while commenting on the team responding positively on changing the lineup. “It allowed us to put more pressure and to force those errors. We have to find a way to win, especially when you don’t have all your stuff going for you in a game.”
Good times is the ultimate goal and responding to those circumstances is a much easier phase to get used to.
“This (game) gives us a head start,” Walker closed. “Now we can get on a row.”
Boerne is next on the hit parade, as CL plays away from home and needing to respond to see what will be the next phase of a season well within reach for the playoffs.
