Hawk Basketball: Then there was One

Head Basketball Coach Jeff Maynard

Canyon Lake Basketball is down to just one Coach after Head Coach Jeff Maynard made the announcement that this would be his last year on the bench.

The Hawks had known about JV Coach David Bentzen leaving at the end of basketball season and a couple of months of silence was met with this news out of the blue.

When asked about the decision to leave, Coach Maynard was quick with an answer, “Family! Spending time with my kids and seeing her (my daughter’s) games…Coaching would not give me that opportunity. I will be working for Farm Bureau Insurance and I’m local, born and raised. So this deal was too good to pass up.”

Coach Maynard continued, “It’s going to be tough, but I have been thinking about a change and it was very coincidental and this deal for me that just seemed right. I did not want to kick myself if I missed the years of watching my children growing up. Coaching from football to basketball takes a lot of time from the family.”

Now Canyon Lake has made the quick decision and moved Freshman Coach Lucas Chapman up to Head Coach.

study for what will seem like a short Summer and bouncing the basketball as Head Coach in a few short weeks.

“I’m going to have one big family of 30,” Coach Chapman started.

On how he will implement his style on the bench, “I will change it up some, but it will pretty similar.”

Coach Chapman also commented on what the future might be like, “We have 25 plus kids playing Summer League and the last couple of years we haven’t had any.”

“We are going to continue to build the program and when fall comes we will have a clean slate.”

Coach Maynard also wanted the fans and parents to know his thoughts on Coach Chapman, “Chap, will do very well and he has a great rapport, and knows the kids and I feel confident in the students coming back…he will learn as he goes! He will do well.”

The Basketball team had their awards banquet among all of the musical chairs being played by the Coaches.

Defensive MVP: Matt Noyola.
Noyola was all over the court this season and like the old advertisement with the Rabbit, Noyola kept going and going and going….well you get the idea.
It did not matter who Coach Maynard wanted him to guard, because he knew he would get the maximum effort from Matt.

Overall MVP: Matt Magness.
If the Hawks have a record, then Magness will either be at the top or close to it. Magness played all four years on varsity and this year

Coach Maynard with Jason Wiggington, Ancel Morel, Matt Magness, and Matt Noyola

led by example on both sides, defensively and of course offensively.
A good player that always had your back.

Fighting Hawk Award: Jason Wiggington.
Wiggington was an unsung hero for Canyon Lake…many times the team has players that might not get as much playing time, but their effort from the practice court and every other facet of the team was certainly the motif for this player.

Coaches Award: Ancel Morel.
Morel was one the most improved players for the Hawks this season as he brought a much needed inside game for Canyon Lake.
He led the team with rebounds and improved his scoring as he played against much taller players in many games.
A pleasant surprise for the Coaches, hence the Coaches Award for this young man.

Congratulations for these and all the players from Freshman to Varsity teams.

Both the Freshman and Junior Varsity had winning seasons so the future will be looking brighter for Canyon Lake.

Departing Head Coach Jeff Maynard did have some final words for the players with what he called Maynardism, “One thing I would like to leave with you and I want you to remember…No matter what happens, finish what you started…Don’t stop and do not Quit!!”

Thanks Coach for giving your all to Canyon Lake these last four years, there are a lot of young man that have improved their chances in life based on how you lived yours!!
