CL Wins Bronze Bracket in Wimberley’s Tex-Fest Tourney
The Hawks started slow but finished with a rush by winning their final three games to salvage a Bronze Bracket Championship last weekend in Wimberley.
Tex-Fest Volleyball Tournament has been on Canyon Lake’s schedule every year and the Hawks were able to get some much needed game experience and end the tournament with a three game winning streak.
“After a tough first day we battled back to sweep all three teams we played on Saturday,” Head Coach Nicole Creek said.
Canyon Lake beat Salado, 25-23 and 25-22 on Saturday. With so many teams in tournaments, teams advance in a best of three series instead of the best of five normally during the rest of the season.
In the Salado game, Marisa Ellis lead the team with 12 kills and finished second scoring 14 assists. Ellis has taken on a more dominant role in the attacking part of her game as this season starts in it’s infancy.
Freshman Halley McKnight has shown enough so far this season to suggest there will be improvement as she also had 15 assists, leading the Hawks.
Two other newcomers, Junior transfer Trena Lorett and Sophomore Hayley Malone finished one and two with seven and six digs in the game.
Lots of new players mixed with some solid veterans has this season showing some positive hope as the season progresses.
Canyon Lake also handled St. Michael’s on Saturday, 25-19 and 25-19.
The Hawks spread the attack to four players in this game.
Junior Amber Ramsey led with six kills, followed by Ellis and Logan Nease with five a piece.
Senior Katy Williams closed out the attack with four kills.
If this part of Canyon Lake’s game continues to improve, then Coach Creek can have several girls with a chance to step up and carry the team if other players are not on their game for any particular night.
Canyon Lake started their streak Saturday with a must win game against Wimberley’s JV team.
The Hawks won, 25-15 and 25-20 to start the day off and getting the team in a good frame of mind.
Now the 4-4 team will be back in action this Tuesday August 21, when CL will again have two other teams coming to the Hawk Gym for a round robin.
Lampasas and Johnson City will be the participants as the Hawks continue their rush to get as many games in the first part of August in preparation for District play.
First serve will start at 5pm.
