CL Freshman Run Down by Bears, 26-0

Canyon Lake was run down by La Vernia Bears as the Freshman team took it on the chin to the tune of 26-0, last night at a soggy Hawk field.

La Vernia’s running game was stepping it off against Canyon Lake as the first half yards were all the result of rushing plays.

The refs were also stepping it off against Canyon Lake, as they amassed 10 penalties for 55 yards. This was not referees blowing calls, it was a freshman team that was not concentrating on snap counts.

Stat line for the game was the total yardage for the first half:

Canyon Lake was still in the game as they were driving for a touchdown as the first half was coming to an end, as on the last play a pass to the end zone was intercepted and returned 95 yards for a Bears touchdown.

The Hawks made some significant changes to start the second half as the defensive line had Gordon McLeary move from defensive end to defensive tackle. That move coupled with bringing Zach Gregory to the defensive end, plugged the hole that was allowing La Vernia to control the game.

“We don’t switch sides,” Gregory said explaining on how they would line up to stop the Bears running game. “I’m always on the right and we moved Gordon (McLeary) to the middle.”

“We just fell apart and had our heads down,” Gregory said commenting about the injuries to McLeary and Woods. “We have to just practice harder and start focusing on winning and playing the game right.”

In the third quarter La Vernia had only 45 rushing yards and no score for that quarter.

Then injuries to Robert Woods and McLeary depleted the line and Bears were seen running all over the field to finish off Canyon Lake.

Bright spots were mostly coming from the lightning in the area, but even though the Bears had running back Cody Davis bottled up, other runners did help in moving the ball for CL.

Timothy Romero finished with a 12 yard per carry night as well as Atticus Crader entered the fourth quarter with fresh legs and 18 yards on four carries.

Quarterback Joseph Arredondo also doubled as a punter and had one of the best punting exhibitions seen by this age group in a while.

Arredondo boomed a 53 yard punt, pinning the Bears at their one yard line in the first quarter. Only one missed punt for the night, but the rest were in the 38 to 40 yard version. Pretty impressive.

Linebacker Dylan Hodges was also a force to start the game as his named was called on numerous occasions tackling bears.

“I was filling the hole and taking on the blocker,” Hodges said with resolve. “They were pretty big and we need to get more physical. We don’t need to worry about their size and just hit them low.”

Canyon Lake Freshman will try to get their train back on track next week as they travel to Burnet for a 5pm kick-off.
