Volleyball: Canyon Lake take care of Bulldogs in Varsity and JV action

Canyon Lake Volleyball team won a game they were suppose to win when they swept Burnet Bulldogs at the Hawk gym last Friday night, 25-13, 25-23, 25-21.

“A three game win is better than a five game loss,” Head Coach Nicole Creek stated. “We worked on our defense a lot this past week and it was better overall match.”

Coach Creek was expounding on how many unforced errors Canyon Lake endured in their five game loss to Llano earlier in the week.

Junior Amber Ramsey continues her impressive play at the net with 20 kills against Burnet.

Senior Marisa Ellis presence was also seen with 18 assists, 4 blocks, and 13 digs as this group of girls ready themselves for a gauntlet schedule when District 27-3A starts against Wimberley next Friday night at the Hawks gym.

“We got some momentum as we ready ourselves for next week,” Coach Creek said.

Canyon Lake will have one more road game this coming Tuesday (Sept. 18) at Devine, before district starts with no prisoners being taken.

Katie Williams has also secured her new role in the back row with a team high 18 digs. This gives the Hawks an advantage as Williams can also use her height at the net during the games.

Williams also led with three aces in the three game match.

Canyon Lake Stats (14-12)

Assists: Marisa Ellis 18, Halley McKnight 12

CANYON LAKE JV beats Burnet JV in a three game set, 29-31, 25-18, 25-20

The Hawks Junior Varsity team finally woke up from their sleepy doldrums and rallied from a close loss after trailing 21-13 in the game.

“We start kind of slow and we have to fight to finish,” Sophomore Kelsey Ahrens said. “Sometimes we need to get more aggressive and we just killed them after the first game.”

In the back row, libero Kacee Vrana played some nifty ole defense as there were more than four times she had to get out of the way of a ball to let it go out of bounds and a point for CL.

“I have cat like reflexes,” Vrana commented. “You have to know how to read the ball.”

It seems like Vrana will need to get some glasses so she can read the ball sooner next week and not have so many close calls.

Another player with a good all round game was Sophomore Lillie Sander who played a solid net game.

“I did not want to mess up and wanted to keep doing my job for the team,” Sander stated.

This Hawk team has some momentum entering district next week.

“This means a lot as we now have a 3-1 record going into district,” Vrana said.

Sander also had some words about next week’s upcoming games, “This win gives us a lot of confidence to go forward…We can be better with practice.”

Coach Leigh Ann Weaver commented on what this team needs to do to have a successful year, “Consistency, consistency, consistency…we will work all day in practice, they (the team) are going to get better.”

Canyon Lake woke and smelled the coffee and when they did, a victory over Burnet was a good result.

Biggest problem will be how the Parents handle their caffeine girls, the ReSporter is thinking a nice assist will help in the transition time.
