Canyon Lake Comes up Short in Loss to Boerne, 43-16
Canyon Lake started on fire as Eduardo Covarrubias and an Offensive Line controlled the early part of this game.
“We came out the first half and did what we wanted to do,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “They just outplayed us in the second half.”
“They are a great football team,” Coach Drum continued. “I told our players that they would have to beat a playoff caliber of team to make the playoffs.”
Seven out of those first eight plays were runs for Covarrubias, as he moved the Hawks from their 30 yard line to the Greyhound’s five.
On Covarrubias last run, an innocuous five yard procedure penalty changed this drive from a second and goal from the five to a first and goal from the 14 yard line.
Three straight incompletions and a promising drive ended with a 32 yard field goal off the foot of Jake Robinson for Canyon Lake.
Canyon Lake’s defense then held Boerne for a field goal try that was wide of the bars and preserving the lead.
The Hawks offense then dominated again by driving for six plays, going 79 yards and a 9-0 lead after the PAT failed.
This drive had Covarrubias with 57 yards rushing on four carries and a 23 yard pass to Matt Andress giving the Hawks a first down on Boerne’s two yard line.
Next play, Sophomore Hayden Dubois scored ending an impressive drive right up the gut on the Greyhounds adding six more points, 9-0 in favor to the Hawks.
Then the unraveling would begin to take it’s toll.
A kick-off return of 82 yards had Boerne in business on CL’s eight yard line and one play later, Boerne was on the board with a Quinten Dormady to Bradley Veselka pass play.
Canyon Lake responded with a 13 play drive down to Boerne’s 15 yard line, when a reverse did not fool the Greyhounds stopping Daniel Camarillo for a five yard loss.
Robinson was call on once again for a field goal, but on this try a Greyhound raced to the ball for a block and a chance to increase a lead was gone.
Boerne continued their onslaught taking over on their 43 yard line and in six plays had their first lead on this Thursday night contest, 14-9.
The Hawks still possessed some fire power as Dubois went 16 yards of two carries and then a patented 53 yard bomb from Belcher to Doug Hubnik helped carve the lead back into Canyon Lake’s camp, 16-14.
Little things sometimes causes a break down and Boerne took advantage when on their next drive the Greyhounds received an extra down based on an off sides penalty taking a running play with no gain to another down and five yards to boot.
You never know, but Boerne would of had a third and ten to convert, but now had another down needing only five yards for a first.
Next pass play went for 28 yards to Canyon Lake’s five yard line and Boerne would go into their locker room with a, 21-16 lead.
Another pesky penalty was spotted again when CL was driving after another Boerne touchdown with a chance to get back in the game in the third quarter, down 29-16.
Canyon Lake had driven from their 26 yard line to Boern’s 20, when needing just one yard for another first down became a third and six after a Canyon Lake motion penalty.
Next play? A fumble for Dubois as he tried for extra yardage to gain another first down.
Dubois had run 10 straight plays on this particular drive, covering 52 yards before that fumble.
Boerne put this game away responding to that turnover. Seven plays and 73 yards later had a convincing lead of, 36-16 going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter had Canyon Lake with three more chances to come back, but an unsportsmanlike penalty and interception ended two of those three opportunities.
Little things kept this game out of reach…
After only 10 carries, Covarrubias was injured and did not return to this game. Those ten carries had amassed 100 yards and the Hawks could of done anything they wanted.
Covarrubias was running inside, outside, and over Greyhounds while he was in this game.
This was even more important in bleeding the clock and not having a pass happy Greyhounds able to get into their game plan.
Canyon Lake also had their second game in history where two backs topped the 100 yard barrier.
With Sophomore Hayden Dubois entering in place of Covarrubias (100 yards) the young phenom finished with 119 yards.
The last time was 2010 season when Zach Henshaw (135 yards) and Covarrubias (103 yards) combined for that dynamic due feat was against Bandera.
Branson Belcher also got his passes to six different receivers which has happened only one other time this season.
Not many penalties, but when they happened, they would change and even kill drives for Canyon Lake.
CL did not have an answer to the Boerne passing game as the second half had this Greyhound team able to catch that plastic rabbit, which is not a good sign for a visiting team.
The Hawks suffered only their second loss when having 20 or more first downs in a game. Last loss was to China Spring in CL’s first ever playoff game in 2009.
Canyon Lake is now 14-3 when rushing over 200 yards in a game and they are 18-4 when outrushing an opponent.
The Hawks are still not out of the picture in making the playoffs as they will now prepare for Navarro in hopes of taking that last spot from this Panther squad.
“We’re not out yet,” Coach Drum reiterated.
