CLJV Boys Finish in Second Place in Texan Tournament
Canyon Lake Junior Varsity had a good run, finishing second in the Wimberley Baskeball Tournament this past weekend.
The Hawks won their morning contest against host Wimberley, which gave this never say die team a chance for a first place trophy.
Wimberley had a defense that forced eight turnovers in that first quarter and that allowed your Hawks only six shots at their basket.
Four made free throws helped close the gap for just a three point deficit going into their next quarter of action.
CL would win their next three quarters as the Hawks started taking better control of their possessions.
The third quarter was a telling stanza as Garret Winters was red hot from behind the arc scoring 12 points (all 3 pointers) that gave the separation from our friends to the North.
“When we started rebounding and running, we started getting good transition three’s,” Hot Shot Winters said. “We can dish inside with Sean (Nolan) and Dave (Pfaff), and we know what we are doing.”
Ten for 18 in the game from three point land which was better than their shots from a free throw line. But those points did not matter as a relentless Hawk team kept the pressure on, throughout the game, which resulted in an 18 point win.
Trendon Martinez and Austin Acosta, joined Winters in double figure scoring with 12 and 10 points respectfully.
“This team has a lot of guys that are unselfish players,” Coach Brian Hooper started. “When we started taking care of the ball, we went to work, but we still need to work on our zone offense and our man offense is working good.”

In their second game, CL spotted the Lobos from Lehman a 10 point lead, but found out that the deficit was too great to overcome.
Another slow start for your Hawks as they once again started with some sloppy play and easy buckets for Lehman.
“This was by far the best club we have faced,” Coach Brian Hooper said. “We kept with them the whole game and we had a never say die attitude, we are going to be a good basketball team and this game will help us….I’m disappointed in the outcome, but this was a good weekend.”
Canyon Lake did close the game to four points in the second half, but just could not climb the rest of that hill.
There was 4:30 time period from the middle of the first quarter through the first minute of the second quarter where your Hawks could not find the bottom of the net.
Lehman, increased their one point lead to an 11 point advantage in that span and that canyon was too deep to climb out of.
Austin Acosta and Trendon Martinez led all scorers with 15 and 13 points respectfully as both players were the Hawks only free throw shooters in this game.
‘Mr. Hustle, Tommy Clark, was all over the court in both games and had many hustle plays that will not show up on a stat sheet. Clark had many caused turnovers and continued to out hustle his opponent.
“Lehman came out strong,” Clark started. “They were quick and we had to change our defense and that helped us close but we could not pull ahead.”
On what a game and weekend like this means for this team, Clark commented, “By far this is the best team we have played this season and we hung with them and it shows we can play with any team.”
Dave Pfaff, also was nails throughout both games as Pfaff started getting significant minutes in both games and also had that all-out hustle.
“We tried and did not give up,” Pfaff said. “A game like this will make us better and they were a pretty good.”
However, to imply that these two players were the only ones with those intangibles would be unfair, as this JV team has a lot of ‘It’ and will be a joy to watch throughout their careers.
Yes, CL lost their final game, but Lehman is a 4A School and even though the score indicates a 12 point victory, their final nine points were from the line as the Hawks were fouling to get back into the game.
Good games all around!
