CL Girls Beat Lampasas in Overtime, 37-35
Canyon Lake Girls won their second overtime game this year when they beat the Lampasas Badgers, 37-35, last Tuesday night at Hawk Gym.
It took the Hawks over four minutes to start the game, before Kelly Long sank one of her two free throws to finally have points on the scoreboard.
After that free throw, Olivia Flores extended the line past the arc and proceeded to make her four three point shots over the next three quarters without a miss.
Those 12 points were half of all CL’s points through the first three quarters and helped keep your Hawks in this game and even helped craft a lead through those middle stanzas.
Flores first missed shot was in the fourth quarter, but it was her lay up later that quarter that tied the game with only 43 seconds left in regulation.
“I had it going left handed and then I was so disappointed when I thought it was coming back out,” Flores said. “Then I saw it go back in and my prayer life had just gotten better.”
Canyon Lake was down, 33-29 with a 1:10 to go, when Hannah St. John made her first shot of the game. That pulled the Hawks to within two and waiting for Flores last heroics in regulation.
St. John’s shot was important, but it was her two free throws in overtime with just 20 seconds left that sealed the deal, “A lot more positive energy and more focus,” was St. John’s response when asked what was going through her mind while setting up for those two shots.
St. John also responded with a steal that did not allow Lampasas to have a chance for another score. “I used my quickness,” St. John said calmly. “I just went to the back side and pushed the ball.”
Canyon Lake still did not have a good game in their shooting department.
“We just keep finding ways to win,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said.
Little things did help in getting this victory.
Katie Williams had an off night from the field, but her 13 rebounds were nails for the Hawks. Williams also led the team with three assists and contributed five steals.
Sometimes it is not about scoring, but taking control of other parts of the game, “I’m just trying to help out my teammates and get it (the ball) to them,” Williams said.
Little things would be those four three point shots by Flores that resulted in four extra points and then seeing a win by two over the Badgers.
Canyon Lake (8-2) is still undefeated at home and will now host in their CL Tourney this Thursday and Saturday.
Games will be 9am and 3pm this Thursday and then their final game Saturday. The tournament is a pod system that makes those times solid no matter if the team wins or loses.
See you there!!
