Freshman Girls Improve to 8-0, After Winning Squeaker over Lampasas, 30-29

Canyon Lake Freshman Girls continue an unblemished year after coming from behind to win over Lampasas last Tuesday night at Hawk Gymnasium, 30-29.

The Hawks battled being down as much as 11 points going into halftime.

CL scored four points in the second quarter quicky but then a lid was put on their basket and that was all they could get for that quarter.

In the third quarter, CL continued their cold shooting. In fact, the Hawks only had nine points through the middle two quarters, which allowed the Badgers to seem invincible, holding a 25-15 advantage scurrying into the final stanza.

Starting that final quarter, Canyon Lake staged a quarter that you could only dream about: fifteen points, which happened to be the Hawks total for the first three quarters. Impressive, to say the least.

Canyon Lake had been on a seven game winning streak this season and now faced a team that looked to be well in control.

 Game 1 Hawks 29 Bastrop 25
 Game 2 Hawks 41 Luling 03
 Game 3 Hawks 37 SA Brackenridge 28
 Game 4 Hawks 28 Somerset 14
 Game 5 Hawks 16 Pleasanton 04
 Game 6 Hawks 40 Cedar Creek 17
 Game 7 Hawks 32 Luling 02
 Game 8 Hawks 30 Lampasas 29

Pretty good line-up of games for this upstart group of girls. This team had a 18 point per game winning margin up to this game.

There is a good chance that this team had not been clawing back in a game this year.

Hayley McKnight came through with a steal and score giving CL a lead with less than a minute left in this contest.

“Coach said, we need the ball, we need the ball,” McKnight said very calmly. “So, I just went and got it.”

Another player that seemed to have ice flowing through her veins was Bailey Drum.

Bailey hit some key shots that helped put Canyon Lake in that position to make this improbable comeback.

“We just wanted it and we started fighting for our record,” Bailey said while commenting on what turned the girls into a different team going into the fourth quarter. “We came together as a team.”

This type of win will help more than those earlier laughers and those are the building blocks that will help withstand other teams, especially district opponents.
