Hawks Win: Freshman (40-13), JV (38-34) and Varsity (46-42) over Comfort

Canyon Lake Varsity has made up their four game losing streak to start this season when they went on the road to Comfort and won a hard fought battle, 46-42.

While, the Junior Varsity and Freshman, able to come away with a victories after being without a game for a week.

Getting cobwebs cleared was good for this impressive group of players.

The Freshman took no prisoners in their contest while enjoying a runaway win by 27 points.

“We started the game by playing at a much higher tempo and moved the ball around better than any game this year,” Freshman Coach John Barthels said. “We have been focusing our practices on defense and moving the ball around…making good passes and we were able to do both tonight.”

Ten different players had a ball go through the hoop in this game.

“Finding open players allows more of our kids to get involved and gives us more options in our offense,” Coach Barthels ended.

“It was good to win a close game,” JV Coach Brian Hooper said. “Comfort did a good job defending our offense. We stepped up our press and were able to cause turnovers for easy baskets.”

Coach Hooper will not allow this team to rest on laurels as he closed, “We need to work on finishing around the rim and eliminating turnovers.”

Canyon Lake Varsity has now won six of their last eight games with both losses coming from Randolph, who will also be hosting CL in this weekends tournament.

Coach Chapman give us an overview of your game against Comfort.

“We found a way to win a game we didn’t play our best, which is what you have to do sometimes,” Coach Chapman started. “I am extremely proud of our guys for that. They fought hard and did not flinch, even when things were not going our way.”

“We haven’t played against a zone defense much so it was good to see that. We now have an idea of what we need to work on and what works.”

Coach you knew Comfort would not be a pushover going into this game, how did your ‘bigs’ do?

“Caleb Kreiger played well with 14 points and seven rebounds. Comfort did a good job of guarding him with their size, but he was very efficient and didn’t force too much.”

“Isaac Pruna did not play and will probably be out another week or so. (Pruna hurt his ankle in last week’s final tournament game) Ray Dailey played a few minutes, but he has also been sick the last few days, and unfortunately played like it. Needless to say, Comfort’s size hurt us, especially because we were not at full strength.”

Andrew Riali led Canyon Lake in scoring this game, but you also had other key players give you some valuable minutes.

“Riali had 15 points and really helped attack the zone. Doug Hubnik had eight points and eight assists with only one turnover.”

“Chandler Faulkner came off the bench and gave us some great energy, he played some great defense and hit a clutch free throw at the end of the game.”

Coach Chapman, how do you feel going into your next Tourney? I saw where Navarro will be one of the teams…do you like to play district opponents before district games start?

“I feel good going into this weekend. Obviously, we are banged up a bit, but that just means that the next guy in line will have to step up.”

“I don’t know how I feel about playing a district opponent early. Sometimes it can be good and sometimes bad. At the least it will give us an opportunity to see how we match up with someone we will face twice down the road.”
