Hawk’s Basketball Get Ready for District Play
Canyon Lake’s quest for another playoff team will continue through this Winter and Spring.
Right now you have two promising scenarios with the Hawk Basketball programs.
The Girls and Boys teams have a legitimate chance to snag a T-Shirt company this coming season with help to design such a shirt.
Soccer has been tough to garner a playoff spot since this sport has been dominated by much larger schools since these teams play in a different district than CL’s other sports.
Because of a reduced number of teams that play that sport, the UIL combines 3A schools with 4A schools to crown a champion in Soccer each year.
The same is true for Canyon Lake’s Swimming team in having a district with larger schools. Another fact is that the Hawk Swimming program is still in it’s infancy stage and that makes competing in this tougher venue doubly hard.
Swimming also is much like Track and Field where playoffs are based on individuals in each event advancing instead of a Team getting in a bus for their next round of events after a District crowns a champion.
Canyon Lake has a few teams that have not had a chance to compete after a district race yet.
Boy’s Basketball, Soccer, and the afore mentioned Swimming program are three programs without a prolonged season up to this point.
The last sport to advance was almost two years ago when CL’s Softball team finished second in their 2010 season.
As it stands right now the sports and year of accomplishment for playoff teams:(Girls Basketball went to the playoffs in 2010 but started their season in 2009).
Football 2009 and 2010 Volleyball 2009 and 2010 Girls Basketball 2009 Baseball 2010 Soccer 2010 Track and Field Boys 2011 and 2012 season Finished 2nd in their District Meet Softball 2011
The Baseball team was able to win their first playoff game while CL’s Softball team was the first team to finish second in District play.
Now back to projecting an end of the basketball season for both Boy’s and Girl’s teams.
Canyon Lake Girls have a 13-2 record that you would want, based on teams that have come up on their schedule.
Their best win has to be a Lytle victory in Canyon Lake’s Tournament earlier this month, that 10 point win was good because of their margin of victory. Also, Lytle has some good wins on their schedule which should give CL’s girls a sense of accomplishment.
Almost all of their other games have come from teams with losing records.
District 29-3A squads has a couple of teams that will be hard to conquer.
Boerne and Navarro will most likely be battling for those top two spots and Canyon Lake can make a run for that third place finish. That would give CL their second time in the playoffs when these Seniors were playing on the Hawk Freshman team.
That battle for third place will be with Wimberley and Fredericksburg.
Bandera will be the school without a spot this season.
Fredericksburg and Wimberley both have losing records going into this last week, but once you notice their games played you will sense these two teams will battle it out with Canyon Lake for that coveted third spot.
The Lady Hawks will have their last Tournament in Lampasas this weekend where CL will be playing in a four team pod configuration.
Three games will be guaranteed and then based on their finish will be matched up with another team that finished in that same spot on the other pod.
These games will be a good test for Canyon Lake with Lampasas (CL won an earlier battle in overtime), Dripping Springs, and Mason playing in that pod.
Good games for a team that now needs to be tested before their district games get going to start the 2013 season.
The Hawk’s 13-2 record looks good but now these end of the year games will be heightened to a whole different level. This tournament’s teams will emulate District 29-3A teams and give CL a measuring stick.
Canyon Lake Boys Basketball is going for win number 10 which is a total not reached in their last two seasons.
The Hawk boys certainly have a chance of reaching that first ever playoff level this season.
CL has won a game over a district opponent already this season in a tournament against Navarro.
Boerne will be a team everyone else will be shooting for as they have an impressive resume so far this year.
Canyon Lake’s slow start has been righted and this team will need to shore up their shortcomings to have a chance against their competitors in District 29-3A.
Take a look at the Boy's Basketball Standings below: W L Pct Bandera 7 5 .583 Boerne 10 8 .556 Fredericksburg 8 7 .553 Canyon Lake 9 9 .500 Wimberley 6 6 .500 Navarro 7 8 .467
Bandera has not played an impressive schedule but do have a loss over a team that also beat CL last week in La Vernia.
Boerne has a slate that has many 4 and 5A schools and many of the smaller schools on their scheduled have been shellacked by these Greyhounds.
Fredericksburg has a scheduled dotted with 4 and 5A schools too, and these Billies were in the CL Tourney earlier this month and finished with one loss to a three time nemesis for your Hawks…Universal City Randolph.
Fredericksburg will be a foe that these Hawks might be able to win one or two games against.
Wimberley will be a tough team this season. The Texans have also played many larger schools and all six of their losses were to those type of teams.
This Navarro team has a loss that came from Canyon Lake and that makes their schedule of played teams not as important.
Navarro can now be judged by CL Coaches for knowing strengths and weaknesses first hand.
Could this be a year where a CL team that has not tasted a playoff become relevant in a legitimate playoff run?
Plausible but this Hawk team will need to conquer some gremlins in their closet to make this a breakout season.
Certainly doable if Canyon Lake can get back on a winning streak going into District 27-3A play.
Lampasas, Blanco, and Gonzales are those stepping stones in the next couple of weeks that might give this Hawk team some momentum entering into what will surely be a tough race.
Playoffs for both Basketball teams would be a breath of fresh air for Canyon Lake starting this new year and hopefully they can respond with enough gumption to make playing extra games at the end of this season a reality.
