CLJV Baseball send Texans Packing, 6-4

Pitcher William Volz

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity took care of Wimberley in their first District 27-3A game giving the Texans a long ride home, winning 6-4.

After a rough start in that first inning, Canyon Lake’s defense buckled down and did not commit another misplay allowing their bats to come alive and their pitchers finish off our neighbors to the north.

William Volz started the first inning having to adjust after some defensive miscues but that learning process is what will pay dividends as this season matures.

“I started pretty good,” Pitcher Volz said. “It kind of makes me think on what I need to work on…I was a little frustrated but then I just let it go and then tried my hardest.”

Volz was commenting on how he approached those first couple of innings while only having a texas leaguer as the biggest hit and no other ball scared the grass in the outfield.

“It took a little time to get going,” Coach Brian Owens started. “We got better as the game went on and got more aggressive at the plate.”

Canyon Lake is always a happy place after a win over Wimberley.

“Wimberley is Wimberley,” Pitcher Headrick said. “We always want to beat them.”

Headrick also had a good outing in this team effort of a win.

“I got stronger and stronger and was fueled by our offense,” Headrick finished.

Canyon Lake has not had a lot of success these past few seasons. When you have Sophomores and some Freshman going up to play for the Varsity, then that gives you an all Freshman JV team.

That also gives your Varsity a young team that is playing all Juniors and Seniors. CL has been outaged these past few campaigns and now with this new influx of players both teams (Varsity and JV) can now have Coaches that look at a much deeper bench.

“That’s a good problem to have,” Coach Owens said with a smile on his face. “I haven’t had a lot of decisions to make in the past on who to play and now I’m looking at a bench that will allow me to use a pinch hitter.”

Good hitting from Colton Avey and Nick Kissell in those middle innings help fuel the Hawks and propelled them to victory.

Canyon Lake took the wind out of Wimberley’s sails in that fifth inning after a three runs which put enough distance on these Texans that after this game they had to go through New Mexico to get home.

Now that is a Bad Problem to have…I would much rather stay on the Good Problem side of things.

Good Win now keep it up.
