A Win is a Win is a Win, CL Beats Lago Vista, 8-6

Canyon Lake has a four game winning streak after an ugly win over Lago Vista

Catcher Michael Brady

Vikings after their 1-day delayed affair at the Hawk Diamond.

The game that was scheduled for Monday night was postponed by wind and CL continued this season by settling in on a four game win streak which has not happened since, since, well it has never happened.

This is now the longest streak of this sort since two three game winning streaks during their 2010 season. A season that was climaxed with a trip to Harlingen and one batter short of a third round opponent.

“We need to work on our mental toughness and we’ve got to focus,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. ”

The Vikings opened up their first inning with a towering home run by Mason Ornales who would also finish off this game with another shot over that same left field fence in the seventh inning.

Both home runs were solo shots, but good hits all the same.

The Hawks responded in their bottom of the first when lead off hitter Garrett Winters walked and eventually scored when Logan Felch knocked him in two batters later.

Travis Walker reached base on an error and then with two runner on Michael Brady broke out of a mini slump with a double scoring both runners. Brady would end with two hits.

Hitting machine, Kyler Huff then did likewise with a double scoring the fourth run knocking in Brady.

Huff has been on a tear this season from the plate and does not seem to be letting up.

“Coach ‘D’ (Dunavant) has been helping me with my swing and also how to approach coming to the plate,” Huff said. “I have been coming to the plate saying…Yes…Yes…Yes as I wait for a fast ball.”

Senior Outfielder Kyler Huff

CL had four hits in this inning and seemed to be in control.

The Vikings scored again when J. T. Buckley singled and stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. A ground out to second base scored this manufactured run.

Canyon Lake had another 4 spot in the bottom of the third when their first seven batters reached base.

Walker walked, Ryan Hutcheson singled, Brady had a single, Huff walked and Cody Powell had his second hit of the game, while T.J. Jones registered his first hit of this season to start this inning.

Winters had his second walk of this game but then the Vikings gunned down Powell at the plate followed by a rally killing double play to end the inning.

“My Senior year we have the talent and ability to do good,” Huff singled out. “We just need to try and stay focused.”

Canyon Lake would not get a hit for the remainder of this contest while Lago Vista would scored 4 unanswered runs for the final, 8-6 score.

On that final inning, the Hawks did lose focus by committing two errors for the second time in their last two games in that final stanza.

“As the game goes on we get satisfied on how things are going,” Huff brought it home. “But Coach ‘D’ brought us in to get us focused on the game and get the win.”

Lago Vista started with Ornales getting his second home run and then a single and error had two Vikings on base and putting the tying run on first base.

A one pitch fly out to T. J. Jones and then another error had two base runners on and being down two runs.

Brady then decided to start his gunnery for this game and season as he caught the Viking baserunner off first base for their second out and essentially taking their tying run off the base paths. The runner was out by a good seven feet as he scrambled back to first.

“I noticed their base runner lollygagging around and then I looked at Travis (Walker) and once I threw it I knew he was hosed,” Catcher Brady conjectured. “We have a lot better start and it always helps to get our momentum….but a win is a win is a win…and I feel we might have a chance for a repeat of what happened three years ago….but no matter what we have to play together no matter what.”

Huff then finished off the next batter securing a win and getting his second save in as many games.

Not a pretty game, but for a team that could count their wins by not even using all of their fingers on one hand last season, this win would certainly not be thrown back into that proverbial lake.

It was a keeper no matter how small or ugly the fish looks like.

“We gritted and grind this whole game,” Coach Dunavant finished. “But it is better to get an ugly win than a glorious loss.”

Canyon Lake will now play some games with larger schools at home starting on Thursday in the Comal ISD Tournament.

Coach Dunavant will now be focused on next Tuesday, when the Hawks play their first District 27-3A foe in the name of Fredericksburg. There are bigger fish to fry and getting that one will define a team very quickly.

Who knows, we might get to use both hands in counting our victories this year. Good Luck.
