Canyon Lake JV Baseball team split a double header with Bandera, Monday night at the Hawk Diamond

The Hawks were a different team when they took the field for the nightcap.
“Coach (Brian Owens) challenged our manhood,” Colton Avey said after commenting how bad their first game was played. “That got us fired up!”
The split was a result of good defense and even better pitching.
How good? Try these stats out for size.
Bandera’s pitcher threw 35 pitches in his first inning of work.
Austin Headrick pitched 30 pitches for the entire game.
How about three outs on three pitches in his final inning.
“I have only done that once when I was eight,” Pitcher Headrick recollected. “I was really focused and Coach really wanted us to turn it around after the loss and get some enthusiasm.”
How about eight total balls and four of them were in that first inning on his only walk. So, four balls for the rest of this game.
Headrick retired 10 Bulldogs in a row to end the game. Last batter to reach base was that walk in the first inning.

“You can count on Austin (Headrick) doing that,” Coach Owens started. “He was accurate and he had control of the strike zone. It also helps when our defense is making routine plays.”
Kyle Krohn led with two hits and a rbi, while Colton Avey was busy with two stolen bases, reached on an error and then with a bullseye on his back was hit two times to reach base.
Eight runs and eight different players that scored.
In years past CL would of been in Bandera’s shoes as a team is as good as their depth that they possess.
After a first game of errors in their 10-7 loss, Head Coach Brian Owens was able to have the Hawks take that same field in the nightcap with total domination.
Bandera had used up all of their pitchers in that first game and had nothing to match this Hawk team on their second go around.
Crisper defense, pitching, and when the Hawks were not being hit by the ball or walked, hitting was also in a good groove.
“It takes the pressure off,” Coach Owens commented when asked about the depth of this team. “We have competition for playing and if one of our guys doesn’t make it then they know they will get replaced.”
The Hawks were on a roller coaster during their three games in the Canyon Tournament a few days back, but depth was there when they needed it, by winning the third game 5-4 over a 5A squad.
Depth is a key element in baseball and it all starts from the mound. Winning a third game while giving up only four runs speaks volumes for what could be in store for CL’s future.
