Softball Hawks Finish Season with Loss to Navarro, 3-2
The Hawks said good-bye to four Seniors on a hard fought extra inning affair loss to Navarro,
3-2.“I thought we played a very good game,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “But our future is bright as we have a lot of young talent and more coming in.”
Canyon Lake took the early lead when scoring on a fly out off the bat of Brianna Young that scored Alexis Robinson who had reached base following on an error.
That run held up until on a controversy call on a run scored after a Navarro base runner scored on a run down between third and second base.
Young had good position to apply the out, but the Panther appeared to slide under that tag.
Freshman pitcher Robinson responded by striking out the side the next inning on a full count pitch.
Robinson had now retired seven straight Navarro batters going into that eighth inning but.an error trying to get an out at first after a sacrifice bunt proved to be a run your Hawks could not overcome.
CL had almost pulled off an improbable act by responding with four consecutive singles in that eighth inning which could of prolonged the game for the, never give up, tenacity of this Hawk team.
This game was not to be as Navarro was able to get two infield outs at the plate and a final strike out.
Both games with Navarro were one run affairs this season as both teams looked like carbon copies of each other.
Now CL prepares for next year and Coach Gallagher is optimistic as the off season looms.
“We had a JV this year which helped our younger players,” Coach Gallagher gleamed. “Playing is valuable as it gives us a chance to look at players to see how they might contribute.”
“If they can learn the game more then I think they will be able to know what to do or learn what they have to do to get better…..the more we can get girls playing the better they are going to be.”
The ReSporter caught up with two more Seniors after this game to get their final thoughts on this year and their four years at Canyon Lake.
Cassidy Riccio: “This has definitely been a great experience…I have made friends and learned how to fight and this has built my confidence and character.”
On what you would like to say to the younger players: “Don’t take anything for granted and play
with your whole heart and don’t leave anything on the field.”Liliemae Daily: “I have grown from my freshman to senior years….Softball has helped me to be well rounded as a person and player.”
On what you would like to say to the younger players: “Leave it all on the field and leave with no regrets.”
The ReSporter will have a Coaches Corner in the next week where we will find out more about Canyon Lake’s future as the community says good-bye to four more Seniors…thanks for giving us thrills and good luck in your next venture.
